With the Republican presidential primary appearing to have narrowed into a two-man contest, Human Events and Red State moved quickly to lock down a date for a Lincoln-Douglas-style debate between Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich.
The two organizations went so far this past Monday as to firm up the Annenberg Theater at the Newseum in Washington as the venue on Dec. 19 after another debate originally scheduled that day was canceled. For its part, the Newseum was excited to host the pre-primary forum.
There was just one problem. While Gingrich was ready to take his place on the stage, the Romney campaign politely declined in a series of mostly e-mail exchanges.
As Joe Guerriero, a Human Events editor, put it to RCP: Newt was all over it, and the Romney camp basically said no. It wasnt a harsh no, but it was a no.

If Newt gets the nomination, he will get the same response from Obama.Newt already laid out a strategy to deal with that... a strategy that probably wouldn't be such a good idea against Romney.
Gingrich will never get the chance, in ANY debate with Romney or Obama.Wrong. Newt has a strategy that will work against Obama... probably not so useable against Romney.
I know his strategy....follow and hound him until he relents...hardly a tactic to be used against a Muslim that has no honor... the MSM will NEVER even report it. Think again.
It will be part of the campaign. They have double-plus busloads of journos trailing each campaign.
They can’t not report it.
There will be 10,000 videos a day posted on youtube.
Think at all.
Huntsman unconfirmedMust be a huge disappointment to his supporter(s).
Your post#39 is absolutely correct.
Newt has been endorsed by one tea party and the president of another tea party resigned his position to go to work for newt. Recent poll shows the Tea Party favors Newt
Dream on. You have an optimistic view of an information industry hell-bent on thwarting everything you hold dear. You Tube, “journos”, et al will be silent. And, those that do make it on the web will be little viewed and not reported main stream.
You dream on. You’re putting them way high on a pedestal. The situation in a general election is in no one’s total control.
One of the reasons I support Newt is he is the only one who can take on the MSM.
You choose to bet on the MSM.
I choose to bet on our side.
I think I’ve got the better bet.
Look, delude yourself all you want to. It will take time to tell, but you’d better prepare yourself of a less than stellar coverage of Newt’s grand tactic.
It is you who is delusional in your worship of the Almighty MSM.
They are not Almighty.
Not only are they nit-wit-prone fools who can’t control a big story no matter how much they try, but they are up against a masterful politician in Newt Gingrich.
But don’t let me shatter your worship of the MSM. Worship them. Bow down to them. Pray to them. If that’s what you want to do, I fully support your right to do it.
Have at it!
Newt is the only one with the guts to take on the MSM, the balls to take on the MSM, the wit to take on the MSM and the will to take on the MSM.
But if you want to worship at the feet of the MSM (oh great and powerful media, how we all fear and tremble and your righteous wrath)... have at it.
Knock yourself out.
Be my guest.
Your delusion that I worship MSM notwithstanding, I do, however, have the full faculty to remember these last decades’ reporting by MSM.
You so easily forget how the MSM chooses what to cover. Alas, it would be a waste of time to remind you because your hopes have overloaded your sensibilities....
Seriously, good luck with your dream. I hope you don’t take it too hard when you find out your wish wasn’t to be.
I’ve already said that I support your right to hold the MSM in such high regard.
I am not criticizing your bitter, cynical defeatism.
I think all too often here on FR there are people who try to limit or constrain the viewpoints of others.
That’s not what I’m trying to do, and wouldn’t be my job in any case. Only JR can say what views are beyond the pale (such as pro-Romney).
As far as I know there is no rule in FR against posting bitter, cynical defeatism and I personally support your right to express it.
Anyway, Merry Christmas and be of good cheer. We are going to rid ourselves of Obama one way or another. I think Newt is the way but if you think someone else is a better choice I’m definitely willing to listen to your arguments.
Okay. This has gone far enough...I never once said that I hold them in ‘high regard’. You’re just pissed because you know in your heart they (MSM) will lie, cheat, obfuscate and outright not-report what you wish with respect to Newt’s Plan. And you don’t like the truth being held up in contradiction to your hopes.
Given the history with the MSM in the last 40 years you would have to be extremely naive to believe they would all-of-a-sudden ‘do’ what Newt arrogantly thinks they will do.
Merry Christmas to you. Even realists think Christmas is real....and being a realist, if it comes to pass Newt is the only alternative to the Muslim usurper, then so be it. We’ll all deal with it (probably to something somewhat better).
I’m not pissed at anything and I’ve said several times now I completely support your right to post what you are posting about the MSM even though I totally disagree with the idea that they have as much total power and control as you are willing to bestow on them.
I don’t know how I can be more supportive than that.
I guess you’re just in the mood to be argumentative (remember, you were the one that started this with the condescending phrase “think again”, and I’m just doing my level best to keep this discussion on an even keel by agreeing with you as much as I can without relinquishing my point of view).
Maybe you’re having a bad day. I’m not walking in your shoes, it’s true. I have no idea what you’re going through.
As for me, I really am feeling the Christmas spirit, including towards you.
And I really am looking forward to Obama-Be-Gone. Whether or not Newt is the agency of that, no one can know right now, of course. But that’s where my estimation lies at the moment.
Obviously, you’re looking at another route for our victory parade to take.
Which is fine.
I’ll take a victory parade any way I can get it.
what an unmanly orifice....
Yeah, lets run our most undisciplined and quirky candidate against Obama. Lets turn the election from being a referendum on Obamas failed policies into being a choice between two personalities where one is more likeable and has better name ID. Thats just pure Gingrich genius! I can see it now: Gingrich outsmarts American voters!
Gingrich is a Pre-Irradiated Candidate.
Look at his sad past. Obama will give Newt a billion dollar reintroduction to the American people before Newt gives his first stump speech as the nominee. Hes had two failed marriages. Hes the only Speaker of the House in history to be sanctioned for ETHICS VIOLATIONS (by his own party, no less) for which he was fined Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars. After which he resigned (you know, QUIT) in disgrace. When Obama is done reintroducing Gingrich to America, even we wont recognize him!
I mean, after all, we can exchange a right of center moderate conservative with a candidate who is probably slightly more conservative but who pathologically does tons of too clever by half out-of-the-box thinking which often transcends conservatism. What a great trade. Who cares about electability and broad based appeal. Well go with the weirdo who looks like he just ate a baby because hes SCARY smart.
Its not like the media will point and say, Hey America, look at what the conservatives think is NORMAL. No, theyll never think of that. Instead theyll be tricked into demanding twelve Lincoln-Douglas debates. But in the unlikely event that there are only two or three standard debates dont worry, thats sure to swing the election.
