Multiple sources familiar with the discussions told POLITICO Friday that Herman Cain is leaning toward suspending the campaign, in the words of one, who stressed no decision has been made.
Hell probably get out, but nothings been decided, another source said.
The one-time leader in the Republican presidential polls is scheduled to address supporters at the opening of his Georgia state headquarters Saturday. He was set to meet with his wife Friday to discuss the future of his candidacy at the end of a week at which he and aides repeatedly said he was reassessing his candidacy.
Cain himself has sounded conflicted about the decision, saying in interviews this week that he was eager to spare his wife and family any further pain. But at events in Michigan, Ohio and South Carolina this week, hes taken a defiant tone.
The source cited the toll the period that began on Oct. 30 has taken on his family something Cain has discussed publicly over the last few days.
The two options hes weighing are continuing forward with the campaign, or suspending the campaign, the first source said.
But Cain may still decide to fight, the source added. Either way, Cain has made clear he is not conceding the allegations against him are true, and also that he plans to keep fighting to clear himself somehow, although its not clear what form that would take.
Whats also become clear is that some of Cains advisers want him to keep going.
Cains campaign spokesman J.D. Gordon pushed back on the rumors that the candidate would likely leave the race, saying, I dont know where they are getting their information.
Gordon referred back to Cains comments on Fox News on Thursday night that hed make a decision by Monday and at a town hall on Friday, where he said hed announce his future plans on Saturday.
I dont have anything to add from what Mr. Cain said in Rock Hill, S.C., and on the Sean Hannity program, Gordon said.
Cain aides were preparing for a campaign through the Iowa caucuses as recently as Thursday night, when the candidates Iowa chairman Steve Grubbs says he met with campaign manager Mark Block in Des Moines. Grubbs said they even submitted a campaign mobile app to Apple for approval on Friday.
Cains schedule is filled well into next week, with plans to campaign in Oklahoma on Monday and to speak at the Republican Jewish Coalition forum on Wednesday. The national campaign also just launched the Women for Herman Cain group, naming Cains wife Gloria, as its head.
We were planning the campaign for the rest of the month. We have a lot of work to do, Grubbs said. Weve got all sorts of things going on, so I would be real disappointed if he did drop out.
Politico quoting unnamed sources.
The liberal media and GOP establishment have spoken: no uppity conservative is going to get the nomination. Only a reliable socialist gets to go up against the communist Obama.
Believing Politico and unnamed sources is like believing Baghdad Bob. Screw you Polutico.
> This does not surprise me.
I am not surprised either, but I am deeply disappointed.
I will vote for Santorum or Paul, if Santorum drops out. The only reason I would vote for Paul is that it would not be a vote AGAINST the RINO establishment and the bolshevik media.
I don’t think I can vote for Gingrich in good conscience.
Concerning the destruction of the country, better that it should be done in one fell swoop, rather than by a thousand cuts.
It’s going to get really ugly.
Politic has done their job well.
Pick one already.. geesh .. u are part of the problem. You have backups for every msm folley...
Politico’s unnamed sources have said a lot of things about Mr. Cain. Thus far they’ve proven to be wildly biased and inaccurate.
Um, he's dropping out. My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Herman pass out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious.
“Suspending the campaign, means “you all hang around and don’t support anyone else, and I’ll decide later”. A big “screw you” to his supporters.
That's gotta leave a mark.
Cain’s interview in New Hampshire was interesting. I think he and his campaign are getting better at handling the crap storm that a complict media has thrown at him. Everyone is second guessing what will happen on Saturday I think he’s going to come out swinging because many are expecting him to quit.
He’s never been a quiter. What better time to emphasis that when everyone, friend and foe, is watching. That should get him a nice bump in the poles.
So long as Herman Cain stays in the race, David Axlerod and his minions will dredge up any woman who's had acquaintance of Mr. Cain, of questionable character, dubious history, and financial hard times and ply her with money to portray Mr. Cain as a sex crazed “negro” to demonize him amongst their faithful and those who lean towards the democrat side.
This has been their modus oporandi since "The One" ran for Illinois Senate.
Well, he obviously didn’t do any of what was said.
If he drops out, it’s gonna make me hateful.
Hateful of the GOP, who failed to stand up for him.
Hateful of conservatives who pussied out.
Hateful of FReepers who talked a bunch of sh!t.
Basically it’s gonna come down to this.
Those who didn’t stand up for him when he needed it, don’t expect me to stand up for you when you need it.
Hope you got enough to get Newt the known philanderer, arrogant POS elected without my help, cuz you ain’t gonna have it.
So that means Obama gets re-elected?
America deserves him, hardcore deserves him.
Yeah, I’m mad bro.
The Obama machine has wrapped chains around Cain and dragged him around the DemocRAT plantation to make an example of him for any other uppity blacks who might consider challenging the liberal establishment. And the useful idiots cheer it on like it's some kind of stupid reality TV show.
No Cain? Sorry, I’ll not vote in the primary. The MSM and RINOs leaders will not tellus who our CANDIDATE should be!
> Pick one already.. geesh
It’s hard to hit a moving target.
I already know who I WON’T vote for. Haven’t made up my mind who I will vote for.
If Cain is ever exonerated, it’s likely to be too late.
For him and for us.
I feel a lot like you right now, I know for me it will eventually pass, but I’m pretty ticked off right now.
