A pizza delivery driver says he was fired Thursday after scaring off a robber with a gun. Miguel Waide says Dominos Pizza fired him for violating company policy.
Police say Waide was delivering a pizza at the Brentwood Apartments near Harry and Woodlawn Wednesday night. Waide tells Eyewitness News it was an unusally large order for the neighborhood and a suspicious man was hanging around by his car as he went up to the door. Waide says no one answered the door and he feared it was a set up.
Waide went to his car and got a handgun out of the trunk. As he turned around, a robber armed with a gun ambushed him.
"As soon as I pointed it at him he just dropped his gun on the ground and started running. I managed to get a shot off right as he dropped his gun and then I fired another one right as he started running," Waide says.
Waide says in that brief moment he made a decision not to become a victim.
"I know the odds say you're not supposed to resist when you get robbed, but I just don't believe in that. I'd rather take the chances in my own hands."
Dominos Pizza wouldn't comment when asked if Waide was fired. The company did say all employees sign a "no weapons while on duty policy".
Waide says he understands the company's decision and admits he knowingly violated the policy to protect himself. Wichta Police say Waide was not arrested for firing at the robber.
Lucky for him. The first shot, no problem since he said he fired as the guy was dropping the gun. But killing a now likely unarmed guy by shooting him in the back as he ran away might have caused him a wee bit of trouble in some places.
Yes, as someone said, he needs to state that the guy pointed a gun at him and he feared for his life and just keep repeating that.
No liberal would ever order another pizza from Domino's.
Imagine inviting a man (or a woman) -- with a gun! -- into your home or apartment.

It’s the insurance company Domino’s carries — not corporate that sets policy.
Yep. Almost all insurance companies disallow weapons as SOP in their general liability policies. This is why the Somali pirates can capture insured ships -- the insurers specifically disallow the insured's employees to carry weapons.
I delivered for Dominos in the late 80’s. One winter night they transferred me to an inner city store. The snow was deep and coming down like crazy. The tips turned out bigger than out in the burbs.
Did ya ever think you were transferred because the last driver was shot?!

Companies have policies like Domino’s because their insurance carrier requires it. If states simply began disallowing anti self defense stipulations on the part of insurance companies, no insurance carrier is going to abandon a state just because they can’t prevent employees from defending themselves - especially as more and more states follow suit.
My brother 20 years ago was a high level martial arts trainer for some branches of military,,,when we were young..years before that, he delivered pizza..he was jumped by 4 guys and knocked 2 out and broke bones on the others..those guys were lucky..the officer who came on the scene said..looks like the delivery guy gave ya’ll a tip as they hauled them off..
The reason you are not supposed to resist is so that there are more crimes, the better to justify higher police budgets. Like Rush says, "Follow the money."
1985 at little caesars pizza in Michigan. My friend was an asst manager and I was hanging out there when a guy ran in with a machete. The girl at the counter gave him the cash and we ran out after him and got our hunting bows out from my buddies truck (going hunting in the morning) and chased him through an open field with our bows at about 75 yards behind him. We came close to getting him but decided to give up the chase after he jumped in a waiting car about a half mile away. Would have loved to see the headline if we caught him.

I used to work at the grocery store on the corner of Harry and Woodlawn. Not a terrible neighborhood but we did have our share of unusual come in there. Wonder how bad its gone down hill.
