Thank you for responding. Your comments on us/we/they is valid. There are other generic "they"s in the letter (for example, verse 18). But I don't think one can argue either way since the direct references to specific groups of people are sparse.

With this being the only specific mention in the Bible, it is hard to come to any detailed conclusion. Paul doesn't condemn the practice (and indeed uses it in a positive way) but it also isn't the point of the letter, so we can't say much about his non-condemnation. He was correcting an incorrect teaching about resurrection, and not teaching about baptism for the dead.

I was born and raised in Missouri and Newt will not even be on the primary ballot there. Of course, most people dismiss Missouri as a bunch of hicks who aren’t important enough to care about. However, if I were living in Missouri right about now I would be thoroughly pissed with Newt!!!
