D.E.A. Launders Mexican Profits of Drug Cartels
NY Times ^ | December 3, 2011 | GINGER THOMPSON

WASHINGTON — Undercover American narcotics agents have laundered or smuggled millions of dollars in drug proceeds as part of Washington’s expanding role in Mexico’s fight against drug cartels, according to current and former federal law enforcement officials.

The agents, primarily with the Drug Enforcement Administration, have handled shipments of hundreds of thousands of dollars in illegal cash across borders, those officials said, to identify how criminal organizations move their money, where they keep their assets and, most important, who their leaders are.

They said agents had deposited the drug proceeds in accounts designated by traffickers, or in shell accounts set up by agents.

The officials said that while the D.E.A. conducted such operations in other countries, it began doing so in Mexico only in the past few years. The high-risk activities raise delicate questions about the agency’s effectiveness in bringing down drug kingpins, underscore diplomatic concerns about Mexican sovereignty, and blur the line between surveillance and facilitating crime. As it launders drug money, the agency often allows cartels to continue their operations over months or even years before making seizures or arrests.

Agency officials declined to publicly discuss details of their work, citing concerns about compromising their investigations. But Michael...

--snip--

Those are precisely the kinds of concerns members of Congress have raised about a gun-smuggling operation known as Fast and Furious, in which agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives allowed people suspected of being low-level smugglers to buy and transport guns across the border in the hope that they would lead to higher-level operatives working for Mexican cartels. After the agency lost track of hundreds of weapons, some later turned up in Mexico; two were found on the United States side of the border where an American Border Patrol agent had been shot to death...

What's Money Laundering when you're gun running?

Note under the federal Bank Secrecy Act of 1970 (BSA), 31 U.S.C.A. §§ 5311 et seq., financial institutions are required to report deposits of more than $10,000 in cash made by an individual in a single day.

Wonder if there are any bank records?

I wonder if this was leaked to the NYTimes and the blame will be on the previous president? Can’t imagine the NYT would do something like this and let the present administration take the responsibility.

I have long maintained that the ONLY plausible reason the border remains unsecured, even though we've known there was an 'illegal alien problem' since the Eisenhower administration, is that someones in high places are making a lot of money off of the drug traffic.

You've been way ahead of me. It just occurred to me that it's silly to credit ideological motivations for Fast and Furious when billions of Bernanks are involved. I do believe that Pablo Obama and Jose Holder are bought and paid for.

Keep in mind that when they can shield criminal activity behind a screen of idealogical BS, the argument over the idealogical motivation will create enough smoke and mirrors that the criminal nature of the acts will seldom be discussed.

Rather than let the banks fail, we pumped trillions of future taxpayer dollars into the Looting of America, all to save the "dollar" (Actually, the Federal Reserve Note).

In reality, all 'we' did was underwrite the NINJA loans which swelled the housing market and inflated prices enough that the same people who took out NINJA loans in formerly redlined neighborhoods could double-dip with a 'Home Equity Loan/line of credit' using the now inflated value of their little patch of the American Dream to cash in. Then walk away, with a bundle (of our money, ultimately).

How many billions went out the door that way, before we were all put on the hook for the debt? How well organized was the effort? Was there an ACORN in every yard, waiting to grow?

Where, ultimately, did the money go?

We have pumped billions through shell companies doomed to economic failure in the quest for "green" energy. I am sure someone is getting plenty of energy from all that 'green'.

The argument centered on AGW, on CO2, on solar versus ethanol versus other biofuels versus wind, but in the end, it was the looting which should have been the topic all along.

How do you know when a 'green' energy company is going to fold? When the grant/"government" (read: "taxpayer") guaranteed loan money runs out. How much got skimmed/padded out of those often huge sums? Will we ever know?

Will the investigation of those ripoffs ever happen?

Not with the current administration or opposition 'frontrunners', and if they did, who would report on it, who will prosecute?

So is it any surprise that all the poo being flung over La Raza, "racism", poor little second generation anchor babies, and in-state tuition masks the key criminal act: the abdication of the responsibility of the Federal Government to provide for the common defense by closing the border, not to mention the Federal interference with the Governments of any State which attempts to take up the slack by enforcing the border of their State with a foreign country.

Areas of the United States have been effectively ceded to the Drug Cartels and Coyotes and are marked to tell Americans that that part of their country is too dangerous for Americans because we have been invaded there.

Is putting up a sign providing for the common defense? If so, let's send a few sign crews to Iraq and Afghanistan and the rest of the world we are spending hundreds of billions of dollars to really defend, and bring our troops home. If the signs get blown up, we can send them a new one, international priority mail, the USPS could use the business.

God gave us poisonous mushrooms, too.

BTW my solution for ending the WOD is very simple.

1. Allow people to grow their own pot and opium poppies for personal use only.

2. NO selling or “giving away”. Do it yourself only.

3. Public caning for selling, second offense double caning, third offense, execution.

4. All dope dealers get executed.

5. No legalization of other hard drugs.

So, problem solved very simply, and anyone who wants to get wasted on their own efforts can do so. The harsh penalties for selling plus the ease of growing it oneself will take all the money out of it in no time.

That's infinitely better than the current prohibition policy, but why not simply follow the Constitution?

Let each state determine its own drug policy. That would be in keeping with the original Commerce Clause and Tenth Amendment.

I agree. This is my plan for state law. There should be no fedlaw involved. Not their business. But they should close the freaking borders and kick every single illegal out, and execute all the illegal drug dealers, murderers, rapists, and kidanppers. Oh, and child molesters.
