TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran's military said on Sunday it had shot down a U.S. reconnaissance drone aircraft in eastern Iran, a military source told state television.

"Iran's military has downed an intruding RQ-170 American drone in eastern Iran," Iran's Arabic-language Al Alam state television network quoted the unnamed source as saying.

Naturally, this is to be taken with a grain of salt, given the original source. Odd they're so specific about the drone model.

The RQ-170 was specifically designed with “mid-tech” rather than leading edge stealth technology, on the assumption that there would be occasional operational losses, so it’s unremarkable that in who knows how many attempts, Iran was unable to down one.

Or, you could simply been a case of mechanical failure.

And if they did, the RQ-170 is a recon and surveillance bird. Developed in 2005, deployed to the Mid East in 2007 and later to S. Korea, and announced publically in 2009.
