Bingo!
How about policeman? Judges? Prosecutors? Customs agents?
When those of us advocating the legalization of drugs appear on these threads we are treated to endless sermons about how terrible drugs are and how they must be stopped. You have just articulated the reason why they cannot be stopped. The more we stop them the more expensive they become and the more expensive they become the higher the profit for breaking the law. The more the profits, the more the graft and corruption and the more drugs get through.
We simply cannot win by losing.
The more we tighten the more the more difficult we make it to stop drugs unless you want to utterly tyrannize our society and tear up our Constitution.
The drug war has been lost for at least a generation. It is affecting our domestic and foreign policy to the point where it is actually weakening the country and becoming a security threat. If a bomb of mass destruction goes off in an American city smuggled for a price by drug cartel across the Mexican border, are we going to blame it on the terrorists or the drug cartel they hire?
Or on the policy which is indispensable for the existence of a drug cartel?
If our child dies from an overdose, or from a stray bullet in a drive-by shooting, will we blame the policy that made it possible?
This will go on and on, the revelations will get worse and worse, the corruption will increase, and our civil society will be undermined and weakened while drug usage actually proliferates.
Meanwhile, our politicians and our anti-drugs campaigners will make preposterous promises about how they're going to stop drug trafficking and most Americans incredibly will believe them.
And, believe it or not, this story (or a version of this story, I didn’t click the link here) was on PAGE 1 of the NEW YORK TIMES.
I’m really surprised at that.
America is #23-or #24 of nations purportedly least corrupt.
That seems little reflection of this our MOST corrupt administration.(But a longer term affect) The laundering comes as no surprise - I see elsewhere that a special employee of the Bush administration suggest organized chaos as foreign policy. Sounds reasonable and helps one understand
our national government’s corruption.
This entire govt is little more than a mafia crime organzation.
We are exporting murder, inflation, corruption
SO WHAT!
We have been doing this a very long time, ANd we will continue. If you think we are going to surrender in the drug war by legalizing them or allowing citizens to decide, you are crazy. There is just too much money and power to be gained with the War on Controlled Substances.
Ok Say we legalize Drugs, which one of you is going to claim responsibility for the immediate FIRING of MILLIONS OF Public Employee UNION MEMBERS?? More than two thirds of our entire Judicial and Law enforcement System is a DIRECT RESULT of the War on Controlled Substances, Who is going to FIRE THESE PEOPLE?? What will they do for work afterwards?? this is all they know?? What about all the Trial Lawyers?? What will they do now?? Rehab Clinics?drug Schools? Literally MILLIONS AND MILLIONS OF PUBLIC EMPLOYEES WILL BE UNEMPLOYED OVERNIGHT, What about the BILLIONS of DOLLARS we Extracting from the Taxpayers to keep this GAME going?? WE are not going to give it back, It’s Ours fair and square. Thats why we are in charge and not you.
NO, We will continue our efforts to keep the FREE FLOW of Controlled Substances running across our Southern Border with Mexico, We will play both Sides and Get RICH DOING IT. We will make sure that the CARTELS are FULLY ARMED AND FUNDED in order to keep the Game Going. If you don’t like it TOUGH, Go Somewhere Else.
Well said, sir.
Exactly right. Or at least until they run out of OPM. (see my tagline)
Where's Warren Zevon when we need him? RIP
Drug criminalization's inflation of drug profits is what gave the cartels the means to corrupt those in high places.
Where's Warren Zevon when we need him? RIP
Bump for later
Right. Lets attack them both, as neither supports the 2nd Amendment.
Hey...it's the Chicago Way! Been common knowledge since 2009!
Corruption only leaves when you address the corrupt with the rule of law. Take away one tool of corruption (drug money) and corrupt officials will just move on to another lucrative tool of corruption.
