Cain left with millions after withdrawing from presidential race
Washington Times ^ | Monday, December 5, 2011 | Luke Rosiak

Mr. Cain raised more than $5 million through September. Information on the financial activity since that time won’t be disclosed until January, but the campaign said it raised $9 million over a few weeks alone.

The funds allowed Mr. Cain and associates to dine and travel in style, using $350,000 on private chartered air in a few weeks, spending thousands at hotels such as the Ritz-Carlton and the Four Seasons, and eating largely steak dinners, records show.

One of the campaign’s top recipients was T.H.E New Voice, a company set up to sell Mr. Cain’s books and motivational talks, which was paid $100,000.

I sent Herman money, but I have no problem with him keeping it.

He did everything he could to stay in the race.

And the Washington Times and the rest of the media did everything they could to drive him out.

Now they want to hold him to a standard to which they don't hold other failed candidates.

FUWT.

I think political donations should be legally declared non refundable unless there is evidence that a campaign never intended to succeed. (which would be fraud anyway)

Its a little like betting on a horse with zero chance of financial return.

I’m going to vote Gingrich because he’s the best of a rotten bunch. But I would not trust Newt Gingrich to hold my lunch money.

Every campaigning candidate pockets their campaign money when they quit. Sometimes they even quit before they actually start campaigning. I bet barney frank walked away with a chunk of campaign money.

They talked about Obama being likely to raise 1 billion dollars. If he spends a couple hundred million on the campaign and banks the rest that would make a nice payday.

I sure would like to know more about mr O using tax dollars to pay for his campaign! How much was that again? Let’s hear about how much he spends on dining out, clothes, etc...

Oh, and I remember these same slum bags making a deal about Sarah Palin going to Wal-mart..

Mr. Cain said Saturday he was withdrawing from the race and establishing an issue group called the Cain Solutions, indicating that the presidential campaign is likely to be converted into a political action committee or nonprofit that can pay for a website and other platforms for Mr. Cain’s ideas - as well as staff, meals and expenses.

There are few restrictions on what former candidates may do with remaining funds except that they may not pocket them directly.

I donated $25, then $9.99. Considering what he and his family have endured lately, he can do what he pleases with it, as far as I’m concerned.

I’m still highly pissed off at not only the “media,” but the RINO establishment for tacitly aiding and abetting the attacks on Mr Cain. If he was destined to go down because he simply wasn’t cutting it on the policy/knowledge side, then fine... but for a worthless pack of money-hungry political prostitutes to destroy his candidacy makes me want to puke.

And I still don’t know who I want to support, going forward.

AGREED!

And I suppose the WT will do an article on how much Obama is spending of OUR money for his campaign? Money we did NOT willingly donate to him, but he travels to his fund raisers on our dime and time, feasts on our dime and time, vacations on our dime and time...and the Wookie in the WH gets to enjoy our money to extreme excesses. I just bet Cain's wife never, or very few times, had even a meal paid with that campaign money.

BTW has anyone else seen those "red shirt" ads (The "I am fierce," etc. ads for kids to volunteer for a year of work in the city) running again as they did during Obama's last campaign? They have been on the air for a couple of weeks here in Virginia. I am sure they are being paid for with government money, under the guise of being for the welfare/self-esteem building of kids...when they are just a ploy for votes for Obama. We are paying for those, too.

I called this a couple weeks ago. Cain morphed from a ‘man of the people’ into Al Sharpton, a false prophet living the high life off the cash his supporters donated.

I saw this in him when the first reports about his affairs started coming out. The sex part did not trouble me at all, it was the details of how Cain had no problem spending NRA’s cash at high end restaurants, giving his staff large raises, staying at luxury hotels, etc. He would have been a diasaster for our country, every bit the freeloader that Obama is.

Rev Al stiffed the luxury hotels he stayed at during his ill fated presidential run, at least Cain raised enough cash to pay his bills.

Come on, get out of the basement. Cain earned his position and CEOs of large organizations are expected to entertain their guests in style. Also, so there is something wrong with Cain giving his staff large raises? This is what makes people work hard, it's called incentive in the free market system. You have heard about capitalism and the free market system, haven't you?

Calling a self-made man, who has been successful in a variety of pursuits, a "freeloader" is stupid even for someone with your limitations.

Mr Cain's giving it to a charity for women would be a very good idea and he really does seem to have a special place in his heart for women down on their luck financially. Maybe in the Atlanta area by the church he pastored there may be an outreach for women who have had the misfortune of getting trapped in a life of prostitution - he could direct the money there - to set them free from this life of bondage, sin, crime, loneliness.

I certainly have heard of capitalism and worked for people who have far more money than Mr. Cain. My last boss could buy and sell Cain a dozen times, and even though he is worth more than $100 million (self made, not inherited), he still lives a pretty humble life. Drives a luxury car when he could easily afford a car and driver. Flies first class commercial when he could easily do the Net-Jets fractional ownership thing. Has two nice homes in Wi and Fla, and donates a lot of money to charity through his foundation.

I was recently at one his homes for 80th birthday party for him. Some of the wealthiest people in Wisconsin were there, people who have donated 10’s of millions to many of their alma maters, have buildings named after them at Universities, etc. I have golfed with these people, worked for them, and almost without exception, they are self made. If you met them on the street, would have no idea how much money they are worth. The ones with true wealth many times do not show it, the ones who try to show it usually are not nearly as wealthy as they want you to appear.

Spending other peoples money to maintain a high lifestyle is not my idea of capitalism. Having traveled on business to Hong Kong, Europe, Japan, etc. I can tell you that I could have stayed at better hotels, ate at better restaurants, etc. I watch the money I spend precisely because in a capitalist system, profit is the ultimate measure of success, not appearances. I treat other peoples money I spend as my own, not as an ATM with unlimited over draft privileges. Any employee of a company from CEO on down is accountable for the expenses they incur, and the CEO should have to justify his just as a mid-level manager should.

The cult of Cain is suc a curious thing. He is self made without question, and deserves credit for that. I think people would be surprised if they saw that his net worth is probably not close to what he portrays, After he left Pillsbury (Godfathers) he did a couple years running NRA at $250k or so, and then a radio talk show which basically failed. He hired a guy from Wisconsin who was stocking shelves at Target to run his campaign, not a true professional who would have cost him a lot of cash.

Power corrupts and Cain seems to have let the position he has attained in society to corrupt him. That is my opinion and no amount of hectoring from FReepers with blinders on is going to change that. BTW CEO of NRA is paid through the dues of the member chapters and restaurants. Cain QUIT before his three year term was up, and the spending thing was a part of why he wore out his welcome there and left before his three year contract was up. That is not conjecture, it is a fact.
