Statement by Gov. Rick Perry: U.S. Senate Should Reject Nomination of Liberal Judicial Activist Caitlin Halligan
AUSTIN Gov. Rick Perry today issued the following statement:
As New York Solicitor General, Caitlin Halligan used her liberal interpretation of the law to target pro-life Americans, gun owners, and gun manufacturers, and otherwise use the law as a liberal political tool. The last thing the American people need on the second highest court is another liberal judicial activist, like Ms. Halligan, who lacks respect for the U.S. Constitution.
The nomination of liberal activist Caitlin Halligan to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals should be immediately withdrawn by the President. If the President refuses to withdraw this misguided nomination, the U.S. Senate should reject her appointment to the second-most powerful court in the country.
Ms. Halligans confirmation has been vigorously opposed by the National Rifle Association, Gun Owners of America, and Committee for Justice. Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously rejected her confirmation earlier this year. In 2003, as Solicitor General of New York, Halligan attempted to hold gun manufacturers liable for criminal acts committed with handguns. She filed briefs in federal court arguing for the unconstitutionality of the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, which the National Rifle Association described as providing essential protection for the Second Amendment rights of honest Americans[.]
Halligan also filed an amicus brief in arguing that federal RICO laws should be used against pro-life groups. She repeatedly attempted to hijack the federal court system in order to impose her own political beliefs on the general public.

Breaking News: Gallup National Republican Primary Daily Tracking Poll Gingrich 37% Romney 22% Paul 8% Bachmann 6% Perry 6% Santorum 3% Huntsman 1% Undecided 14%
You haven’t seen Perry’s internals.
This judicial nominee is a real piece of work.
Bet she would be headed for the Supreme Court and tapped to replace Ruth B G.
When the republicans take back the senate, let’s hope they can, Kagan will be impreached...lying sack of chit.
What are they? (Perry’s internals)
That aside, polls aren’t going to cause me to develop Newt Amnesia.
This president’s tendency to appoint so many women should tell us something, I’m just not sure what.
If Perry learned something from the kick in the nuts he got after calling his base “heartless” he might get somewhere.
Newt is for amnesty and in June 2011 Debate Newt Gingrich called Americans Heartless for wanting to deport 20 million illegals.
"GINGRICH: No, but let me say this, John. No serious citizen who's concerned about solving this problem should get trapped into a yes/no answer in which you're either for totally selling out protecting America or you're for totally kicking out 20 million people in a heartless way. There are -- there are humane, practical steps to solve this problem, if we can get the politicians and the news media to just deal with it honestly.
" June 2011 Debate Transcript
There will be one shot inbound at Newt that will stop him dead in his tracks. It isn’t goin’ be that long either.
What, he's going to hold a press confrence and show us his x-rays and MRI scans?
Yeah, he did, and jerk wagons like you, that lie about it, only piss off those of us that watched that debate.
I was leaning toward perry until that debate, so put down the shovel, stop digging and no matter what Newt or any one else said, PERRY USED THE WORD HEARTLESS ABOUT ILLEGAL ALIENS.
He has learned something and he is definitely getting somewhere. His numbers are moving up in Iowa and South Carolina where he's now running third. Folks are giving him a second look and liking what they're seeing.
No, Perry did not. Check out your facts a little better. And behave yourself toward me. HEARTLESS was dreamed up by the Perry haters, he did not use that word. I’ve got the statement...provide me with the statement where he said heartless.
Be calm. Rational. Thoughtful.
Perry was talking about the single issue of instate tuition rates for children brought here by parents who entered illegally.
The children aren’t illegal immigrants, they are pawns, not actors, in the illegal immigrant invasion.
Anyway, he said if you want to punish children whose parents were the lawbreakers, you don’t have a heart.
This was shorthanded by the offended to be, you are heartless, and many portrayed it as referring to securing the border, other issues about illegal immigrants, etc, but it clearly was referring only to children who by federal law must attend our schools.
Those are the facts.
Perry then took the words back. He holds the same view about that particular issue, but he stated that he was wrong to impugn the motives of people who happen to disagree with the instate tuition law applying to children of illegals. He apologized.
Hey, for what it’s worth, I don’t care if you never change your views, no matter how unfactual and wrongheaded they seem to me.
Go forth in peace.
But staying calm helps, no matter the situation.
Again he never said heartless...Now Newtie did...but that didn’t offend anyone. Newt is a pretend conservative has no record to stand on. What he has is a progresssive record, which he is hiding today. Perry has a good conservative record to stand on and be proud of it. Whereas Newt and Mitt have shameful records, so they keep lying about their records.
Everyone has internals that's why no one is dropping out yet. Are you telling me Cain and Newt had the same conservative credentials?
1.) The first adjective on your home page is “Happy” but you don’t sound very happy.
2.) What’s a “jerk wagon”?
3.) Let. It. Go.
a. Time to let it go big fellow.
b. If you can’t do that, go ahead and fart—you’ll feel better.
Perry may sound stupid but he’s really not. I grew up with guys like him. They chew their words carefully before they spit them out.
I was in Oklahoma in October (my birthplace/former stomping grounds), after living in Kansas and Indiana for many years, and as I walked away from some old school pards I heard the word, “Yankee”. I went back and asked them what they meant.
They said I talked too fast but the one apologized for calling me a ... well, I won’t repeat it.
An apology from a cowboy is the real thing. Perry apologized. Palin ain’t running. Let it go.
I am for people, individuals, exactly like automobile insurance, individuals having health insurance and being required to have health insurance, and I am prepared to vote for a voucher system which will give individuals on a sliding scale a government subsidy so it will ensure that everyone as individuals have health insurance. In 1993
or this in 2011?
All of a sudden responsibility to help pay for healthcare. And I think that there are ways to do it that make most libertarians relatively happy. Ive said consistently we ought to have some requirement to either have health insurance or you post a bond or in some way you indicate you are going to be held accountable.
And when asked
VOICE: "That is the individual mandate, is it not?" Did he reply?????
Its a variation on it.
Perry said that?
It is worse than I thought...
So sad..no it was Newt. But hey prepare yourself for week after week, story after story of more Newt famous quotes and Newt debating Newt.
He apologized for insulting those who have a different opinion on Texas’s decision to allow in-state college tuition rate for undocumented children brought to Texas by anyone, primarily illegal immigrant parents.
Conservatives should feel confident with the selection of Harriet Miers to replace Sandra Day O'Connor on the Supreme Court for a simple reason: George W. Bush selected her.
Much has been made in the press about conservative unhappiness with the White House on issues such as spending and immigration and most recently with the selection of Ms. Miers. However, while these tensions are not insignificant, the president has stayed remarkably true to conservative principles on every major decision he has made since winning the Republican primary.
Now I will make this truce with you, you keep from slamming Perry on Perry threads and I wont go to Newt threads to slam him. If you wanna come to enjoy the conversation, great but if this is gonna be a repeat where every time a Perry thread is posted hordes ascend to simply get nasty , well I think that probably is bad for everyone at this juncture in the election.
What that has to do with Perry's comment is the issue...
Nice attempt at diversion though...
I give it an 8.
This was from a recnt article just to get an idea of how Newt is going to be destroyed leaving only Romney and Perry (unless Perry drops out but my guess is he's in it for the long haul and you'll be glad he stayed in)
In last week's CNBC debate, newly-minted top-tier Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich claimed he was hired by Fannie Mae to be a "historian," and claimed that pointed out flaws in their "insane" business model.
But an investigation by Bloomberg reveals that Gingrich was much more involved with the government-backed lender than he let on and that he was hired to promote the company (and its business practices) to other conservatives.
"Former Freddie Mac officials familiar with the consulting work Gingrich was hired to perform for the company in 2006 tell a different story. They say the former House speaker was asked to build bridges to Capitol Hill Republicans and develop an argument on behalf of the company's public-private structure that would resonate with conservatives seeking to dismantle it."
Don’ you remmeber? Hypocrite, Mitt Romney, was attacking him when he used the term you don’t have a heart. Everyone knows Romney is the “Tin Man” and that might be the first words that would pop out of your mouth too if he was staring you down. LOL
Beside Perry has apologized many times so why would anyone still hold it against him? Time to get over it. There are much more important issues.
Yes, and you've got the "facts" exactly right. But since when did "facts" matter to the Perry haters.
This is the court where they get teed up for selection to the Supreme Court, isn’t it?
I accept his apology, if not his candidacy>
The chilrun are college students but according to your rationale they aren't illegal immigrants, just victims of the system.
If perry manages to get the pubbie nomination, I'd vote for him over obummer, but he's only one step ahead of huntsman and that other crazy Texan.
I’ve been lurking here since the 2008 election, and I remember when the name of Newt Gingrich was poison around here as recently as last fall. Originally I was a Palin supporter, and then Herman Cain; when Perry announced his run, my response was “meh.” But for the past several months, thanks to the information I’ve found posted here, I’ve come to understand that Perry is truly our best choice——a solid, proven conservative and Christian with a decade of leadership already under his belt. I don’t care about the debate gaffes-—Obama can barely communicate without his teleprompter. And I don’t care about the “heartless” remark, since he has apologized profusely and often. I want a decent man for president with no hidden baggage and no liberal-leaning past. I believe Perry’s the one.
Why are you even worried about this? Its not going to be pushed off on you and your state? In state tuition is strictly a states rights issue so why do you even care about what Texas has done for 10 years with their tax money? It doesn’t affect you.
This is he dumbest thing for people to get upset about. Rick Perry is not advocating this for his policy if he is elected president. Give me a break.
No illegal children are going to get a tuition break in your state unless your state legislature votes for it.
Actually, if the kids of illegals qualify for instate tuition, then they have to be applying for legal residence, which no longer makes them illegals.
Very well said. I am thrilled you as a lurker were influenced by what we posted here on Governor Perry. Even after all the abuse Perry and Perry supporters have gone through for months.
That really makes it a non issue. Only people who desparately want to find a reason to hate Rick Perry could possibly still be upset over this.
Agree. They to have some excuse to hate Rick Perry.
Thanks. I’ve seen what you describe, and to me, it’s inexplicable. You folks have done a great job of forging ahead, though. The information you’ve posted has been excellent.
Sorry, but Perry is the better man and the better candidate and as long as he’s in the race, I’m sticking with him.
I will support the eventual nominee but not going where you suggest right now.
Funny how Newt seems to be forgiven ‘heartless’ problems, gal problems and Nancy problems, while people on here are still nursing hurt feelings on one word uttered by Rick Perry.
normy, I’m with you. I will make a similar pledge. I’m tired of slamming Newt anyway. I think his support is large but paper thin.
But some people just live their life hoping for a Perry thread they can get on to insult Perry.
Bless you, Catherine. You are exactly the sort of person we’ve been posting on these Perry threads to.
It’s hard sticking with it because we have to endure so many nasty people, but we realize that many lurkers check these threads out and some of them have some sense.
You are one. thank you.
Good for Rick Perry!
Yes, this sick piece of sh!+ Halligan must never be confirmed.
