Occupy NOLA sweep a success, Mayor Mitch Landrieu says
The Times-Picayune ^ | December 06, 2011 | Brendan McCarthy

Mayor Mitch Landrieu and other city leaders deemed the sweep of Duncan Plaza and eviction of protestors a success Tuesday morning, just hours after New Orleans police disbanded the high-profile encampment. In a move that had been forecast for days, dozens of officers fanned out across the public square in an early morning operation, forcing out more than a hundred people, some of whom were homeless, and others who identified with the "Occupy NOLA" movement.

Landrieu, speaking at a City Hall news conference, said he thought the police sweep was "well-timed and well-organized." One person was arrested, while dozens of others complied with police orders to leave the park.

Landrieu estimated that about 150 people had been camping in the park. He said public health issues, such as unsafe electrical outlets and unsanitary conditions, had become a growing issue and factored into his decision to evict the plaza's occupants.

Forty-three of the campers were taken to shelters or transitional housing recently, said Stacy Horn Koch, the mayor's point person for homelessness. Twenty of them were received services during this morning's raid.

Members of a city homeless outreach team were at the police sweep. While some from the encampment took their offer of a ride to a shelter, others pitched their belongings into carts and backpacks and made off into the night.

The sweep occurred just hours before a federal court judge was to hear a motion for a temporary restraining order that would halt such an eviction. That hearing is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. before U.S. District Court Judge Jay Zainey. The filing argues that protesters' conduct was protected by the First Amendment and noted that the city had other options in handling the matter.

How about that?

NOPD can somehow disband a group of OWS protesters without using pepper spray or nightsticks while other departments have had to resort to such tactics.

Are the lib/asshats and their moonbat enablers confused or what? First they say these societal-freak “demonstrators” are representative of everyone...then, they arrest and evict them. This is pathetic street theater worth watching if you need a continuing laugh.

Perhaps the NOLA protestors were little cowards, unlike their more agressive brethern who turned on and threatened the police, who in turn replied with stronger measures.

“Perhaps the NOLA protestors were little cowards, unlike their more agressive brethern who turned on and threatened the police, who in turn replied with stronger measures.”

More likely, it is due to the fact that NOPD actually knows how to conduct crowd control as they get a great deal of practice at crowd control.

The other departments around the country who we have seen pepper spray or beat OWS protesters and violently attack Pro Life advocates may not have the crowd control skills of NOPD.

I don't know what news you are reading. did the NOLA children toss rocks, chunks of concrete, firebombs at the nola police? Didn't think so. Think the nola police would have responded with teargass/pepper spray - you betcha - standard police tool. Were you to carefully read the events, the police responded when attacked. When the children didn't attack or threaten, then nothing happened.

Could you please cite evidence that the OWS protesters at UC Davis threw chunks on concrete or tossed fire bombs at police prior to being pepper sprayed?

And can you cite evidence of Pro Life protesters throwing chunks of concrete of tossing firebombs at police prior to being beat down by the police in Denver?

Would you like other examples of police brutalizing peaceful activists?

The NOPD has the best crowd control abilities in the Country. They get lots and lots of practice during the parade season where they deal with thousands of drunks every year and in addition there are many other large festival that are always going on year round. Unlike the SFPD ,the NOPD will not allow decadent anarchy.

Also, I doubt the protesters would want to bring on the wrath of the NOPD and their Horse Mounted Police. Then Horse Cops are very well trained and very effective. Watching them clear the streets at midnight on Fat Tuesday is a sight to behold.

The events are quite similar in that both the pro life protesters in Denver who were manhandled and the OWS protesters who were pepper sprayed were peaceful.

Peaceful protesters, no matter their grievance should not be brutalized.

If ignorance is bliss, you must be very blissful. You are ignorant of the events at UCD and blithly attempt to equate the two.

Did the prolifers vandalize the campus prior - NO

Did the prolifers surround and threaten the police - NO

did the prolifers threaten to prevent the police from departing the area with the people they arrested - NO

Go ahead and keep sucking up the koolaid.

Can you provide evidence that the OWS protesters who were pepper sprayed were the ones who threatened to police?

Please provide a criteria for when you believe the police should use violent means to put down a protest.

They were part of the common mob and a subset of those who threatened the police. those are the facts. They were ones who told the police that they would let the police leave ONLY if they released the arrestees.

Don’t want to belive it - then you can wallow in your ignorance.

Pepper spray doesn’t fall under my definition of “violent” means.

Keep drinking the koolaid
