The children, a 10-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl, remained ...

Newt’s fault, because he would want to put the kids to work after they get out of the hospital/s

What was her income? A single person making $800 a month or less can qualify. There has to be more to the story.

No doubt some tool from the left will very soon argue that except for the Republicans’ “refusal to tax the rich” this tragedy would never have happened.

How much do the people in the “welfare office” make? How much to their benefits cost? What actual work do they do?

What a carp headline by the WaCompost. She wasn’t denied food stamps, she failed to provide necessary documentation so eligibility was never determined.

Mentally ill, with elements of substance abuse to self-medicate. Bet on it.

Government dependency drives people nuts. So, I blame Big Government.

I wonder if she visited any Churches or private charities in the area? I bet they would have found a way to help if it was primarily a food/hunger issue, especially with children involved.

Very sad for all involved.

This is so horrible; those poor kids! The mother was obviously mentally ill and the system failed. What else is new? P.S. Where is the father?

It sounds like she was nuts. If not certifiable, she evidently went around the bend.

Moved from Ohio to Texas. Applied for food stamps. Didn’t give all the necessary information. Waited for two months to visit the welfare office again, and brought the gun with her.

I could sympathize somewhat if she had tried and tried to get through the bureaucratic hoops, because I know how hard that can be. First time I applied for social security at the local office, I got the wrong bureaucrat, spent hours, and went nowhere.

I went in again, got the right bureaucrat, and everything went fine. But most of us are familiar enough with the system to know you just have to keep trying. Evidently this woman didn’t.

Doesnt matter.

This case will become the poster child that eligibilty requirements are too strict.

Obumble will say eliminate them. Free food and checks for all.

The outright misery the welfare state was supposed to suppress is alive and worse then ever, what a horrible and senseless waste.

Looks like we're fast on our way there already. Have you seen this story? http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/seattle-welfare-recipient-lives-million-dollar-home-161252749.html

No, it's our fault. We members of the 53% who pay taxes must realize that we all need to work harder and contribute more so those who choose not to get an education, and choose to exist on government handouts, can live a better life. I have no problems giving aid to those who have lost their jobs, but I have problems with those who never made the effort.

Food stamps were passed with the idea that families needed the stamps so the children would have food on the table. The school system feeds the children two meals per day at school free. Even during the summer there are arrangements made to feed the children. If children are fed, why give them food stamps. Aid for Dependent children should suffice.

I can’t help but wonder if she moved from Ohio to Laredo fleeing either the intervention of the state of Ohio or the father (or family). She wanted a city where slipping over the border was easy if they tracked her to Texas.

It just goes to show you... If you cut funding to food stamps, more children will die! (future NY Slimes headline)
