Actually, a reasonable argument can be made that Smokey (the) Bear's existence has done way more harm than good. Due to the interference by man, the attempt to suppress/fight wild fires (which sometimes are a natural occurence), has now covered darned near the entire Western part of the US in prime kindling. Poof! Controlled, managed burns seem to be a smarter/better way of clearing out the scrub and undergrowth occasionally.
