Democrat says GOP trying to deny blacks the right to vote
The Hill ^ | December 7, 2011 | Pete Kasperowicz

A Democratic lawmaker said Wednesday on the House floor that Republican legislators around the country are purposefully trying to deny blacks the right to vote by pushing for voter identification laws.

“It’s no coincidence that a disproportionate number of these affected voters come from communities of color as well as the poor, the elderly and students,” said Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.), a former chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus.

“Having been born and raised in Texas, this certainly looks like a poll tax to me, which those of us remember as a way to prevent African Americans from voting. These voter ID laws have a partisan agenda: seeking to disenfranchise and deny specific populations of voters before they have the opportunity to elect their representatives in government.”

She also said the laws are meant to change election outcomes by “turning the clock back to the days of Jim Crow.”

Lee is the latest Democrat to charge that laws requiring people to show a valid ID to vote are aimed at suppressing the black vote to get better results for Republicans in the 2012 elections. Republicans including Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) have said ID laws are needed because there are several examples of voter fraud, such as the discovery that ACORN was registering non-legal voters.

Last month, Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz openly accused Republicans of trying to rig the 2012 elections by passing voter ID laws.

On Wednesday, Lee charged that the ID laws would prevent 1 in 4 blacks from voting, and 1 in 5 Hispanics and Asian Americans. She also said the laws are a return to the voter suppression that was seen in the controversial 2000 presidential election.

“I came to this floor years ago, after the stolen presidential elections in Florida and Ohio, to protest the results of those two elections that were filled with voter suppression,” she said. “It worked for Republicans before, and so legislators in 42 states in this map of shame have doubled down on these strategies to make it harder for certain communities to vote.”

Would she really have us believe that lack of photo ID is rampant in the black community?

Republicans are heartless!

Are there no dead people in your family? Do you not know how they would vote if still above room temperature? Do the dead ask for much? Do they indulge in the creation of Green House Gases like greedy Republicans? Why do they not qualify for those handy absentee ballots? Are they not indeed "absent?"

Where, O where is this "compassionate conservatism" one hears so much about? The fact that so many of these perpetual voters whom the Republicans wish to crack down upon are black is ipso facto proof of racism!

With the millions of taxpayer dollars funneled to community organizers for “voter outreach” and yet somehow the idea of them using some of those funds towards an “ID Drive” is not even considered. Their solutions are never intended to fix a problem but to perpetuate it.

When they were trying to craft voter ID legislation in Georgia, the blacks first cried that some were unable to afford to get an ID. The lawmakers said fine, we will make an ID free to those that can't afford one.

Then the blacks whined that some were unable to get to a place to obtain a free ID. The lawmakers said fine, we will provide mobile units that will go around and make photo IDs available to those who can't get to an office.

At that point, the blacks screamed racism because some of them don't have the proper paperwork to get a free, mobile ID. Apparently the elderly don't even have birth certificates or anything to prove ID and citizenship.

I don't know how it finally worked out, but there is ALWAYS GOING TO BE A REASON THAT WHITES ARE RACISTS.

Maybe the blacks should spend as much time trying to bring their culture into the current or immediately past century.

Because requiring an ID to vote would require one to get off their fat ass and go get an ID? I see.

Well said. Many blacks in the Dem party use racism as a crutch but you don’t hear blacks in the GOP screaming racism. Most members of the CBC are the biggest snivelers.

OK, so why is ID required to buy alcohol?

So why is ID required to buy cigarettes?

So why is ID required to board an airplane?

So why is ID required to open a bank account?

So why is ID required to drive a car?

So why is ID and registration (and sometimes a 2-week waiting period) required to buy a gun?

why does that not surprise me at all.

There is always an excuse but the real reason to not show ID is to get illegals voting and the left voting more than once.

In my state McCain won the state 53% to 37% but because of early voting obama won.

Now I live here and trust me I know of only a handful who voted for bozo the clown. During my travels I saw many more McCain stickers.
Now all of our amendments ballot questions including homosexual marriage went all right wing.

Now obama says he own the state of over 200,000 votes therefore there must have been a going on a million who came out just to vote for obama early.

Later on weeks go by and the GA media did an investigation and found over 100,000 votes were cast illegally from just two states, GA, OH, those voters from those states voted in their state and my state,
Now add all those north eastern yankees who have a snow bird address down here but vote up there and down here , then add illegals, and then add those who voted more than once and there is why obama won this state.

That is nuts there is no way someone born anywhere in the USA after 1920 does not have a birth certificate. This would’ve been my Grandma’s 100th birthday today and she was born at home inWV even she had a birth certificate.

"That is nuts there is no way someone born anywhere in the USA after 1920 does not have a birth certificate."

Having had your birth registered and having a copy of your birth certificate are two different things. I know black people who do not even know for sure when they were born, let alone do they have a birth certificate. Some don't know for sure the parish in which they were born. On top of that, it costs money to get a copy if you know where to look, and many claim that they don't have the money.

The school systems and the drivers' license depts. did not have the stringent ID requirements long ago ... certainly not the requirements we have today. Once you have a license or are in the school system, there was never a need to have ID again.

Tell Baba that we will gladly accept fingerprints in lieu of photo ID.

The voter has to stick around while we run his prints through AFIS, however.

I think the title got cut off.

Obviously “more than once” was supposed to be part of the title.
