Time magazine names Occupy Wall Street the No. 1 U.S. news story of 2011
Hotair ^ | 12/07/2011 | Tina Korbe

Posted on 12/07/2011 12:40:28 PM PST by SeekAndFind

However wrong the rankings might be, I have to admit Time’s ”Best of Everything” lists are pretty fun to browse. In fact, if I made a list of reasons to check Time.com, the magazine’s immortal lists would be the first and last item on it.

But, really? The journalists at Time think ”Occupy Wall Street” is the No. 1 U.S. news story of the year — ahead of the GOP primaries, the economy, the Gabby Giffords shooting and the debt ceiling crisis? What, oh what, was the rationale? I know you’re dying to read this:

To some, Occupy Wall Street is the left-wing iteration of the Tea Party, directing their rage not at big government but at the big banks that gutted the world economy and took billions in bailouts from the U.S. government while awarding themselves hefty bonuses.

But many in the movement see their cause as part of a more global zeitgeist, in keeping with the anti-austerity demonstrations in Europe and the leaderless uprisings of the Arab Spring. …

[T]he sheer persistence of the occupations, galvanized by incidents of heavy-handed policing in New York and California that shocked the nation, have given the protesters’ appeals for economic justice a weight that may play a real role in the upcoming presidential election.

So much in that description that I just love. For example, I love that, according to Time, the banks took billions in bailouts from the government (i.e. the government didn’t voluntarily give taxpayer dollars to ‘em). I love that, according to Time, heavy-handed policing just came out of nowhere to galvanize the movement. I love that, according to Time, OWS, which just might play a “real role” in the upcoming presidential election, matters more than the state of the economy to which the movement itself was only one of many responses.

Let’s postulate a more plausible rationale for Time’s implausible choice: Must be that OWS is the only story that kinda sorta looks good for a certain struggling incumbent. And it only kinda sorta looks good for Obama because the MSM and Democrats have attempted to link the amorphous movement to the president’s jobs act and his present class warfare pitch, all while carefully overlooking the in-your-face violence that characterizes Occupy. Note that the Time description references over-the-top police action, but fails to mention the more than 400 incidents of violence, vandalism and outrageous behavior that have accrued to Occupiers. Now that might have been a reason to name OWS No. 1.

No wonder Commentary’s John Podhoretz tweeted out this new nickname for Henry Luce’s once-innocent baby: “Time, the magazine that keeps embarrassing itself.”

I wasn’t shocked at the heavy handed policing. I was amazed that not more policing took place.

The parasites who feed off our society throw temper tantrums and demand yet more handouts from hard working Americans. This is the number one story in America in the era of Obama. What was once the greatest country in the world is focused not on productive citizens but on pathetic whiners and violent criminals.

My first vote would be for the many Trillions of dollars the U.S. population is on the hook for with out having had any say in the matter. The President is pandering to the have-nots while shooting a river of cash at Europe and Wall Street.

Second would be for the U.S. having abandoned the century old foreign policy of propping up or ignoring semi-benevolent dictators who are staunch allies or at least not major trouble makers in favor of turning over four or more countries to Al-Qaeda and the Taliban.

Occupy Wall Street merits no recognition on it’s own, because it’s merely an offshoot of the socialist movement in the U. S. that has been active since the early 1900s.

As A.N.S.W.E.R. and hundreds (if not thousands) of like minded groups in the U. S. mobilized over the years since the late 60s and early 70s, nothing has changed.

They have wanted the U. S. S. R. to be copied in the United States. Until that is attained, they will be here off and on to be a major pain in our collective posterior.

Time Magazine is merely a fellow traveler with these groups. It’s a subversive anarchist socialist rag. Who knew?

And of course, the Tea Party is the radical harbinger of evil to them, a major threat. Well, in all honestly, the Tea Party is a treat..., to them.

Long live the United States as a Capitalist Free Enterprise zone. F the flavors of the day, communism, socialism, fascism, marxism et al, and the donkey (party) they’re riding in on.

That was FAST. 2011 isn't even over yet. In fact, I'm FURIOUS that they picked such a lame story when it should be obvious that significantly more important things happened this year in the World of Obama.

I would like to see who the “donors” are who keep this afloat through craigslist ads, food donations and such.

I can take a *guess*, but I’d LOVE to see documentation.

Anyone know anyone who is doing this?

Where are the investigative reporters compiling a list? For sure it’s a tentacle or two off ‘discover the networks’...I just want to see proof. Am I s’posed to believe it’s Joe’s pizza? Marie’s donuts? The local sammich shop?

I agree. I’d also like to know who was paying some of the protesters to show up. Some stated they were paid. Crickets!

It’s my take the unions pay people. It’s also my take that college professors give extra credit to folks who participate. High school teachers may as well.

This isn’t an effort that just sprang up like the Tea Party did. No Tea Party members are paid to be out there.

No, the banks didn't TAKE the bailouts, they were handed the bailouts by BIG government. So, without BIG government (at which they are NOT directing their rage) there would be no bailouts. Brilliant.

Sigh.

If there was a prosecutable event here, there would be arrests, indictments, hearings.

The banks were offered a way to make lots of money, risk free. They took the government up on the offer. When it blew up, the government bailed them out.

So the government should be “occupied”, not the opportunists.

Same goes for the immigration problem. Working immigrants should be held harmless.

OWS is *only* a news story because journalists and the MSM *made* it a news story.

In the beginning, it was just a handful of leftists hanging out. Then the media made it a BIG STORY. And their buddies joined them.

This is a manufactured news story. Smaller than pro-life marches, smaller than Promise Keepers rallies, smaller than Tea Party gatherings.

I meant to say illegal.

They are as much opportunists as WallStreet and Banks. The government implied: come on over and work and we won’t ask questions. Never should have happened, but I can’t blame the illegal immigrants as opportunists.

Now, they are getting preferential treatment; by liberals in a twisted way because they are illegal. No car impounds on DUIs, no arrest for driving without license, qualification for assistance easier. This will never stop until either they are made legal or quasi citizens or deported.

Again, occupy the government.
