Sources: Virtually no chance McCain will endorse Gingrich

Sen. John McCain, who won the Republican nominee for president in the 2008 election, has largely avoided commenting on the 2012 field of candidates. But he’s gearing up to finally endorse one of them. Sources tell The Hill it won’t be Newt Gingrich.

Republican sources familiar with his thinking say he will probably endorse his onetime political enemy, Mitt Romney.

There is virtually no chance, sources say, that he will pick former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), who has surged into the lead in polls, stoking consternation among his ex-colleagues on Capitol Hill.

The reason: the same one that keeps coming back up. Electablity.

There is growing concern among many of McCain’s Senate Republican colleagues on whether Gingrich is electable in a match-up against President Obama.

Of course McCain will back Romney.

Didn’t think there was ever any question about this.

Ahhh, and I’m sure the endorsement of that feeble minded LOSER really meant a lot to Newt, well Bob Dole is still out there somewhere.

McCain’s endorsement can be considered as the kiss of death for any candidate receiving it.

I didn’t realize that McCain still existed. Some people just don’t know when to exit the scene...

Does this mean that McCain won’t be on the short list for SecDef?

All the better for Newt IMO.

I’m still not a supporter of Newt, but this telegraphs McCain knows of at least one person that is worse, and is holding out hope that someone even worse than them will appear on the horizon for him to collaborate with.

Impeach McCain today!

Of course McCain will back Romney.

Didn’t think there was ever any question about this.

I don't know, I kind of thought of McCain as more of Huntsman Republican, after all Romney didn't serve in the Obama administration like Huntsman, so he might not be enough of a "Maverick" (AKA Traitor) for McCain.

McCain will endorse whoever he thinks Obama can beat in 2012. That way he can massage his bruised ego by saying his loss in 2008 wasn't so bad, because Republicans couldn't win in 2012 either.

Like the rest of the RINOs, McCain will endorse whoever he thinks has the greatest chance of losing to Obama.
