Newt Gingrich has at least one name on his list of potential running mates: GOP rival Mitt Romney.
"I think Mitt Romney is a very admirable person, and I'm not going to pick a fight with Mitt Romney," Gingrich said in an interview Wednesday with CNN's Wolf Blitzer.
When asked if he would ever ask Romney to be his vice presidential nominee, Gingrich didn't mince words.
"I think the consensus is that he'd certainly be on the list, whether he'd want to or not," Gingrich said. "He's a very competent person. This is a very serious man. I would certainly support him if he became the Republican nominee."

Alas for Newt, Real Republicans don’t want Mitt on your short list for anything except maybe Commissioner of Revenue.
Nope I am vindicated. Now that it is being posted on Free Republic I am done. I am going to watch Revenge now. Later. Have fun calling others liars. You do it so well.
Geeks don’t win anything but debates.
I will not vote in any election for Romney.
And now we’ll have double the reasons to vote against this RINO abomination tag team.
LOL LOL ain’t ever gonna happen...Newt’s playing politics
Pick Allen West and I might go for you.
I hope Newt keeps his feet clean, He keeps shoving them in his mouth.
I’m with you there. If Newt does this, he loses my vote. (not sure he even has it yet)
Nighty night. Don’t forget your Prosac.
Now who could have seen this coming...
Republicans seem determined to open the door for a strong (fiscal) conservative, reign in the gov’t third party run...
It’s sad to watch.
This is a brilliant political ploy. Newt stays above the fray while keeping the 11th commandment in tact. Newt’s too shrewd to think that Mitt would help the ticket.
Hey Newt. Wanna’ win a Darwin Award?
A CNN headline with quotes from someone who refuses to badmouth other Republicans and refuses to be baited into doing so by the media.
That some here believe it would actually happen is comical to me. But whatever...night all. Enough politics for one day.
Newt is a scumbag. I will heartily enjoy watching him crash and burn. The sooner the better.
What ever chance you had, it’s gone now, newter.
Newt is a saint. Now that he’s Catholic, there is actually a chance.
By CNN no less. I’ve seen more lefty sources posted here than on DU the past few months. Unbelievable...so many wee wee’d up. Lol.
That is how I see it. Playing chess not checkers.
Nice way to end your run, Newt.
I think the feedback is important, even if this is just a trail balloon statement. If it’s a backhanded slap, it’s still not something to toss around light, Romney is poison.
You’re right. He should have said “No effin’ way will I let that dirty Mormon anywhere near Washington once I’m elected. He’s scum. I hate him. How can you even ask such a question”.
Cause that wouldn’t have stirred things up at all. Some of you people are laughable. Your agendas are showing. Oops!
And what is the Obama alternative?
You people freek me out.
I'm with you. I want Republicans attacking Obama, not each other. On the short list of attacks should be what is going on with MF - that is a national scandal. Over $1 billion stolen and nary a mention in our banana republic media.
Witness the deathknell of the Republican Party. The GOP is determined to lose in 2012.
Rubio for VP, Romney for Sec. of the Treasury.
I thought his answer will “kill him with kindness perfect.”
exactly. Newt is being the gentleman still, not picking on the other GOP candidates. He is keeping his focus on the enemy: Obama. What ‘nasty’ thing can Romney say to him now for saying this?
Newt would never ask Romney to run with him, and likely none of the other candidates either.
“This is a brilliant political ploy. Newt stays above the fray while keeping the 11th commandment in tact. Newts too shrewd to think that Mitt would help the ticket.”
Exactly right. He was not going to take the bait and attack another Republican. He has pretty much been steadfast on that point and was the sole Republican candidate that I can remember who came out and supported Herman Cain. He is not going to have Mitt as VP. Now I do like Mitts choice of John Bolton as Secretary of State.
I thought his answer was “kill him with kindness perfect.”
I am still waiting for the GOP to audit the stimulus spending, almost a trillion bucks.... maybe they got a tenth of it to keep quiet?
Agreed. He’s trying to play nice and avoid the blaring headlines that would accompany the “Hell no, the guy’s a blithering tool with good hair” comment. There’s more chance that my dog gets the Veep nod than Romney.
Newt is a big lib who loves libs. Oh well...! Now, we know for sure.
“Now I do like Mitts choice of John Bolton as Secretary of State.”
Yikes! I meant to say Newts choice of John Bolton.
Newt once again shows his political ignorance. The man never had a conservative bone in his body, and still doesn’t. He would make a deal with the devil himself, if he thought it might lead to a few more votes for himself.
My initial reaction to this news is “Meh! So what.”
Romney as Newt’s VP has no influence over SCOTUS appointmens, no authority to write EO’s. Romney’s influence would be restricted to that which Newt would allow.
If I’m not seeing thing clearly, please FRiends, set me straight, educate me.
A week ago, most of us were delighted that Romney finally was put in his place, so we ALL (most of us :) got excited about NEWT'S resurgeance.
Newt = 100 points of good will
Then, Newt finds Mr. Trump such a "character bigger than life" etc. I did not like that.
100 - 5 = 95 points.
And now, if this is true... THEN Newt has no idea how many of us DETEST this man...
95 - 10 = 85 points...
I At this rate, pretty soon, he will not seem so SMART/WISE as I thought at first... So my advice to SANTORUM AND MICHELLE... KEEP AT IT, DON'T GIVE UP ... Everybody says Newt is in the habit of destroying himself... I'm beginning to think, this might actually happen...
Amen! Even if we lose with Perry, at least we lose fighting for the cause. Not fighting the enemy’s cause.
