Voters Flee Democratic Party in Key Swing States
ABC News ^ | November 7, 2011 | Amy Bingham

President Obama’s uphill battle to re-election is getting steeper.

A report released today by the centrist think-tank Third Way showed that more than 825,000 voters in eight key battleground states have fled the Democratic Party since Obama won election in 2008.

“The numbers show that Democrats’ path to victory just got harder,” said Lanae Erickson, the report’s co-author. “We are seeing both an increase in independents and a decrease in Democrats and that means the coalition they have to assemble is going to rely even more on independents in 2012 than it did in 2008.”

Amid frustrating partisan gridlock and unprecedentedly low party-approval ratings, the number of voters registering under a major party is falling fast, but it is also falling disproportionately.

In eight states that will be must-wins in 2012 – Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina and Pennsylvania – Democrats lost 5.4 percent of their registered voters while Republicans lost 3.1 percent. The number of independent voters in those states jumped 3.4 percent.

We don't have to declare a party affiliation in Wisconsin, and that is not of which I speak. Every election cycle, the winner is determined by a certain percentage of people in "the middle, who don't seem to have any solid criteria by which they make their voting decisions.

Labels aside, the values and intents of each side have been clearly defined-moreso in the last 10 years or so as the Socialist hard Left has become comfortable in revealing what they are truly all about. (Not to say that those who run as so-called conservatives don't walk back on their campaign rhetoric - that is a differnt issue.)

But for those who waffle back and forth between what are now such clearly defined stances-I'm sorry I have absolutely no use for such people - they do tremendous damage to our nation. It's the old adage - "if you don't know what you stand for...you'll fall for anything."

Please do not confuse “independent” with “moderate.”

Good point, thanks...I tend to equate them as the same thing, i.e. the "mushy middle". I certainly understand the desire of some not to be party affiliated.

Ok, I can agree with you there. I just was taken aback by the adjectives ascribed to independents, thanks for clearing that up.

In that case, I agree with you. I don’t understand people that waffle back and forth, either. I like the line used in “The Shawshank Redemption”: “Get busy livin’, or get busy dyin’.” I personally believe that everything is black and white, just that we mere mortals see in shades of grey. That having been said, if we’re trying to stick to black and white, I have found that the “shades” of grey become more and more stark over the years. But hey, I’m also one of those people who’s shocked by practically nothing. I knew Obama was a marxist satanist because he himself said so, those who voted for him and were surprised were either ignorant, stupid, or both.

P.S. I love the line you said, “if you don’t know what you stand for...you’ll fall for anything.” And sorry if I was a little crass, in the first post, my apologies.

Mygirlsmom clarified that for me, too. I’m an independent, because for the entirety of my adult life the Republican party was too leftist for me, too. My dad (Nearly 70) was Republican (I think, he at least always voted Republican, except the possibility of Ross Perot, for whom he may have voted, I’m not sure) when I was growing up, and has now switched to independent, I believe. Having lived through many administrations, he essentially says that his party left him. (Mom’s always been an independent that I know of, she came from Democrat roots, and never lept from one plantation to the other, lol).

Not at all....in reviewing my original post, it is rather harsh. Chalk it up to my tagline......I am quite disgusted and frustrated with the whole ball of wax lately.

No such thing as “independent voter”, because, when they vote, they have to choose between republican or democrat or some other insignificant party. Once they make a choice, they’re not independent. The label doesn’t mean anything unless you can vote for the “independent” permanently. People can be neutral, but while making a choice, they’re not neutral or independent.

Those in the middle, the ones that straddle the fence, endanger both their posterior and their posterity. Those that induce the most anger in me are those Democrats who are dictionary progressives or liberals and with out a single thought support the communists that refer to themselves as progressives or liberals and who control their party. The Republican party is as bad, rinos rinos everywhere, communists calling themselves Republicans, trying to hide their agenda.

If we want to survive, as a nation, as a republic, we must flush the progressives from both parties, from all government offices, from the media, from positions of instruction, both public schools and universities. The progressive political philosophy must be rendered ineffectual, laughable, an object of ridicule. The progressive must be excoriated and driven out of any position of authority. Any adherent of such an absurd idea should never be paid more than minimum wage.

Agreed. But they are more pervasive and firmly entrenched than most realize, and they will fight tooth and nail against any and all attempts to move them an inch much less remove them.

I've been living it this whole last year during the "occupation" of Wisconsin. Seemingly normal, rational people that I have known for years are turning into raving, spittle spewing lunatics over minimal wage and benefit concessions that are a drop in the bucket compared to what we are experiencing in the private sector

” - - - the number of voters registering under a major party is falling fast, - - - “

Amy, Amy, Amy - - - -sigh. Your puff-piece on THE watershed election of The Republic was sorry, at best. Your article was as useful as observing: “ It is raining outside my office window.”

What are you doing with your “all-I-gotta-do-is- journal-to-make-the-world-what-my-Professors-want it-to-be” degree? THINK! Your Professors were stuck on STUPID!

I printed one of your better quotes. It was near the front of your article, and I read on to see what analysis would be brought to bear on the observation. The result was more descriptions and election ideas that came from political hacks.

Look up this word: D-I-S-G-U-S-T.

Now walk a mile in any lifelong Democrat’s Shoes. Harken back to the days of y’or when DEMOCRAT Bobby Kennedy warned America to “not always look to Washington for solutions to problems.” A month later he was shot dead.

Remember Adlai Stevenson who never used a cliche’. Remember the bills from Congress that THE CONGRESSMEN wrote by themselves.

Fast forward to today and notice that NOTHING good comes out of Congress, bills are robo-voted without reading, bills are thousands of pages long, regulators write the bills not the Congressmen and women, and all bills come from UN-ELECTED, faceless, hirelings in bowels of the White House at 1600 Entitlement Plantation Avenue.

Talk to some “people on the street.” Avoid the political hacks because they are ONLY concerned with “winning” an election.

We don’t give a damn who “wins” IF our National Debt continues to increase, Congressmen and women lack spines to stop madmen such as Obama from continuing to destroy America, the Attorney General lies to Congress about his plan to kill off our border patrol officers,- - - -etc.

” Put on your marchin’ shoes” as arrogant Dictator (in his own mind) Obama commands, and wear out some shoe leather.

Ask the older ex-Democrats about the Conservative Southern Democrats battles with the NE Democrats, and the Western Democrats. Ask them about the days when Congress proposed bills to the President to be signed into law.

Then ask them what THEY think has changed - - - - if you have the guts to hear the word disgust.

Funny that you should make the comment about “the Establishment vs. the People”.

In 1983, Richard Viguerie wrote the book “The Establishment vs. the People: Is a New Populist Revolt on the Way?”.

This book as well his his 1981 book “The New Right: We’re Ready to Lead” were extremely influential in helping me solidify my political beliefs.

If you’ve read either book, then you know exactly what I’m talking about.

Obama and Holder are hoping their Black Panther poll watchers (er intimidators) will fan out from Philadelphia across the state to keep the voters on the Democrat plantation.

The reality is we are living on a sinful planet and it is impossible to find perfection here. Get in here and work to make it better but do not have unrealistic expectations.

The Republican Party is too far left for me to want to belong to it

So are you going to wait until you find the perfect party and then participate? It's more fun to sit on the sidelines and howl at the moon, isn't it, than to get in the mix and dirty your hands along with all those other imperfect persons.

Thanks for your help.
