It's not like Judaism is some minor cult half way around the world that nobody knows about. It is a well known world religion, and the handlers around the president should be very well versed in what a non-Jewish president can and cannot do, what they should participate in or not, and how it should be done. It isn't like these events are rare, they come up every year at least.
This is part of the job called "being the president" that Obama has no skills at whatsoever. As president he is representing the American people in a display of goodwill towards one of our religions. It doesn't matter what his own personal feelings are towards Judaism. He is the president, and that's part of his job.
The Friends reported this morning that he postponed his Hawaii trip until Congress votes on something that will hurt the country first.

Of course FR’s spell checker isn’t clever enough to flag “Signer” as misspelled when it follows Isaac Bashevis and should have been Singer.
He’s punishment straight from God. There’s really no other explantion.
