Hospital Aborts Wrong Twin in Horrible Mistake

A woman in Australia who was pregnant with twins decided to have one of her babies aborted after doctors discovered that he had a life-threatening congenital heart defect. The seriously disturbing part? The doctors aborted the wrong fetus, terminating a perfectly healthy child.

After doctors realized the "blunder," the woman, who was 32 weeks pregnant, had to undergo an emergency cesarean to deliver the sick fetus, where it was later terminated. The Royal Women's Hospital confirmed the incident and referred to it as a "terrible tragedy." Um, yeah ... one could say that.

I honestly really don't even know what to say about this. It's one of those occurrences that's so terrible and heart-breaking and unreal-seeming that it leaves me sort of confused. I can't imagine -- literally -- what it would be like to go through something so gut-wrenching. The decision to terminate the one twin had to be taxing and grueling enough for this woman. To then have both of the twins terminated -- because of a hospital's mistake? I can't. I wish there was something I -- or anyone -- could do for this poor lady. But I know there's not.

“Can someone explain to me what is the different between “terminating” a disabled infant, and Hitler liquidating mentally disabled or otherwise handicapped people?”

There is none; we are making a master race. Older people have told me how much more common it was years ago to see dwarves & midgets; now they’re often murdered before they see the light of day.

My wife was told one of our children had an increased chance for Down’s Syndrome based on something from a sonogram, and encouraged to terminate the pregnancy. She wouldn’t (she wouldn’t even get that test with the needle that sometimes causes miscarriages), we aged several years in four months thinking about how difficult things would be, and she delivered a totally healthy baby.

We have different doctor now; I sincerely believe that this is a sanitized version of the sterilization abuse that doctors used to save the world decades ago.

“This woman seemingly had no qualms about murdering the one.”

That’s right; no sympathy for the “mother” here. I do sympathize with the murder victim and the sibling who has to live with an evil mother.

Am I reading this right, the tragedy is terminating a perfectly healthy child?

No sibling, both were murdered.

The baby was probably long dead (and discarded) by the time they noticed that they had killed the “wrong” baby,

I missed that right there in the second paragraph; absolutely disgusting. Talk about Karma (at least for the “mother”...).

About 33 years.

What, like have killed the ‘defective’ baby first?

What an ass.

the decision to kill off the sickly baby was a sad one....lots of things are "life threatening" but often these congenital abnormalities are repairable....but I'm not an expert....

karma has a sick way of coming around...

what was that song...."mother and child reunion is only a notiong away"...

My very-strong willed mom said she kicked him out of the room and switched doctors.

Let's hear it for strong willed moms! Mine was given some medication to make it easier for her to carry me in the womb....Thalidomide. Mom flushed the pills. (Thanks, Mom!)

How about carrying both babies to term and letting God sort it out? That would have eliminated any mistake.

What I don’t understand, is the baby would be considered near term, and if it were that severely sick. Why not bring it into this world for God to decided and make its life matter then if you see that God is going to take his child back, why not donate that babies organs so other babies could live and yours would of not died with no purpose. It’s a sad world when we kill children when so many want children of any kind.
