MOSCOW Tens of thousands of people held the largest anti-government protests that post-Soviet Russia has ever seen on Saturday to criticize electoral fraud and demand an end to Vladimir Putin's rule.
Police showed surprising restraint and state-controlled TV gave the nationwide demonstrations unexpected airtime, but there is no indication the opposition is strong enough to push for real change from the prime minister or his ruling party.
Nonetheless, the prime minister seems to be in a weaker position than he was a week ago, before Russians voted in parliamentary elections. His United Party lost a substantial share of its seats, although it retains a majority.

That’s really sad; Russians rally against voter fraud, Americans just say “whatever”.
Putin is already distancing himself from the unpopular ruling party. And he’s opening the steam valves to prevent a blow-up. He knows which way the political winds are blowing.
We may want to learn from this. It might be us doing this protesting after the 2012 elections. The DemocRATS seem to be pushing their voter fraud gig very hard this time.
Think about this, seriously. In Russia a massive crowd is treated peacefully. In America, the land of the free, they are gassed, beaten, disbanded, and arrested.
Whether you agree with OWS or not, tell me something hasn’t gone Bad Wrong in this country.
In all fairness, had they been camped out on the steps of the Kremlin for 10 weeks I expect that they would have been disbanded there too.
And, what’s with the beatings claim?
During the Russian Civil War, Cossack regions became centres for the Anti-Bolshevik White movement.
Russia lost it’s national soul when they murdered the Romanovs.
Putin is a Cossack and most of the people in the corporate western media are a bunch of desperate Communists who failed to steal the election...
Interesting point of view.
I don’t trust anything coming from the drive-by media... they are communists...
I don’t necessarily trust Putin either, but at least I know who’s side he is on.
Putin would be an improvement over Obama.
If the Russians really want a communist, maybe they would make a trade with us?5
Interesting. I need to do some reading up on this.
