He could have bet a beer. Or maybe a steak dinner.

But during a heated dispute with Rick Perry during Saturday night's debate in Des Moines, Iowa, Mitt Romney extended his right hand and asked the Texas governor if he'd wager $10,000 to settle a dispute over his healthcare record. The rich bet instantly provided Romney's opponents with new ammunition for their charge that he's out of touch with middle-class America.

I agree, but perception is everything these days.

If I had been Romney I would have bet Perry a New England Lobster/Clam Bake versus a Texas barbecue with all the trimmings.

It would have been funny and shown class.

But he thought of the first thing that came into his head....money.

I don’t even think that he will be considered for the VP spot by any one of the remaining candidates. He showed himself as a little rich and spoiled brat.

Whatever you think of Romney, you cannot convince me that he wants the destruction of this nation that Obama wants.

None of us will ever have any idea what Mitt Romney is really trying to accomplish.

Clearly he has an agenda but he is not ever going to tell us regular folk what it is.

Newt was his usual arrogant self, Paul was level-headed for a change, Bachmann remained irrelevant, as did Santorum. Perry looked kinda good -- at least the most genuine of the bunch. Too bad he doesn't have a chance at this point.

The bottom line is that tonight's debate will cause no movement toward Perry, Santorum, or Bachmann, nor will it change anyone's opinion regarding Mitt or Newt.

Therefore Newt won.

Where is the Tea Party? What the hell happened?

The tea party movement is progressing just fine, it is just succeeding more slowly than some folks might want. (Also, some people are declaring the tea party finished just because they want it to be finished.)

Herman Cain was buoyed by the tea party movement but failed to rise to the occasion. The same is true for Michele Bachmann.

We could never have expected to clear out the RINOs and bring some new face all the way to the White House in just two election cycles. It would have been nice, and it wasn't impossible, but we had no reason to expect it and the fact it didn't happen is no reason to count the tea party movement out.

The only thing that causes movement in the GOP is scandals. Newt's scandals are aplenty, but time has given him a pass.

Scandals are mostly perpetrated by the MSM. That crap doesn't seem to happen on the Dem side -- hum, wonder why?

I won't mind if Newt wins the presidency, but I don't have much confidence he can win the general. It's not like he has a groundswell of support, regardless of what the polls say. People are picking him because there isn't anyone else to get behind.

Rand Paul, Marco Rubio, Paul Johnson, Mike Lee, Scott Walker, etc., etc.

We can create a groundswell of support for Newt once he wins the nomination.

All we need to do is list Obama's numerous major flaws to America and tell briefly how Newt will in each instance be better.
