Mitt Romney’s $10,000 debate bet will haunt him forever
SFGate: Politics Blog ^ | 12/11/11 | Joe Garofoli, Chronicle Political Writer

Posted on 12/11/2011 5:09:54 PM PST by SmithL

For as long as he lasts in the prez race, Mitt Romney is gonna regret offering to make a $10,000 bet with Rick Perry at Saturday night’s GOP debate. Why? Because only rich guys make $10,000 bets. The rest of the world says, “Betcha five bucks.” Or “betcha a beer.”

But not Mitt, the son of an auto company CEO/Michigan Governor. Guys like Mitt, who is worth north of $190 million bet $10,000.

If you missed the moment — or, we hope, have enough of a life that you weren’t watching a political debate on a Saturday night — Texas Gov. Rick Perry again accused Mitt Romney of altered a later edition of his book that pertained to the individual mandate for health care. Independent fact-checkers have shown the Perry’s claim is WRONG.

But instead of just again sticking to the facts, Mitt went into Flustered Mitt Mode. You know, when someone dares to challenge the CEO, even with the wrong facts:

“I’ll tell you what. 10,000 bucks? Ten-thousand-dollar bet?” Romney said to Perry.

“I’m not in the betting business,” Perry replied.

This is news? We know Mittens is super rich.

I’m no romney fan - not in the least - but this line of attack is, well, dumb. We know he’s rich. Everyone knows he’s rich. Heck if he woulda bet a ten spot, the same people would criticize him for being cheap.

IMO he was just challenging perry and perry wimped out.

As someone who cant stand Mitt Romney this whole “10,000 bet” thing is SO overblown. Apparently some people have never been to Vegas, Ive seen people lose 10 grand in 5 minutes at the blackjack table..go to ANY sportsbrook, people bet more then 10 grand on sporting events.

Romney should have bet a dinner or a beer or burger. But... $10K??? Isn’t it nice he has that to lose for fun. I dont’ begrudge him his money nor do I begrude others who are rich. If they got through hard work, determination and dedication then so be it. That is their reward.

That being said... there are a LOT of other rich people out there in politics. A LOT.

I think Perry handled himself well with that. He simply said he wasn’t in the betting business. That was a fine answer. Romney needs to take it down a notch.

It’s worth watching the debates just to watch Perry get under Mitt’s skin. He’s either touching Perry, giving him the evil eye or doing the wanna bet routine.

I’m sure Newt wanted to give Perry a big, sloppy kiss after Perry slapped Mitt down on the Palestinian as an invented people fracas and then baiting him into the money-is-no-object, free-wheeling gambler gig.

Since I haven’t read Mitt’s book, I don’t know what he has said. But I have read that a second edition was published that erased many things.I think that was what Perry was referring to.

The thing I found amusing was that Romney offered to bet with a man (Perry) that is totally anti-gambling. I laughed really hard at that.

We have been trying to get casinos in Texas...and Perry has said...not on my watch. Mitt made me laugh.

He offered a bet that wasn’t taken.

If Perry had taken the bet then it would have held more power.

As it is, Perry didn’t take it, and the bet was left lying in Mitt’s hand like a dead fish.

It was an unforced error of Romney’s. Perry handled it beautifully.

And the dollar amount is significant, for a number of reasons. Romney placed himself in a no-win situation when he offered the bet.

Yes, he can afford a $10,000 bet because he’s a multimillionaire. What it said when he offered it was that he is one of the rich, powerful elite. That was foolish.

If he had offered a low-ball figure because he was trying to deflect from his wealth, it would have appeared cheesy.

He couldn’t offer a bet that would benefit a charity, because his Mormon faith specifically frowns upon gambling.

And now he has the Mormon community embarrassed for this stupid bet that he made.

Romney made a fool of himself up on that stage. And he knows it.

Much ado about nothing.

The media is just setting the scene by trying to convince people this is an issue.

Meanwhile the country is crumbling, we are on the edge of an economic and cultural abyss, Obama is working hard to finish his destruction of the USA and expand the rule of militant Islam.

But the media spends their time attacking and demonizing republicans at every turn.

MEDIA VETTING OF REPUBLICANS VS. OBAMA

I agree. This bet challenge is all about image, and Romney's isn't good. Nobody will remember what the kerfluffle was about, but they will remember who the high-roller was.

Some say Obama wants Romney, because he will fit like a glove into the class-warfare anti-Wall street hate campaign allegedly being planned for next year. If that all comes to pass, we will hear more about this big money bet later.

IIRC, Romneycare does have an individual mandate. We are studying the difference between islam and Christianity in our adult Bible class (LCMS) congregation and Mormonism is next.

One question came up today about this "bet", and I said mittens was going to be chastised by his church. WELLLLLLLLLLLLLL, one of our members who has studied the Mormon teachings said that it was just like islam. You can tell a "lie" if it is for the betterment of the religion.

This idiot is a disgust that he has to use the (R) behind his name for political advancement. I couldn't squeeze my nose tight enough to vote for him.

I did not even see the debate as it happened.

Romney's willingness to go along with the criminal empire up at Be-A-Con Hill by downtown Boston (near where I was raised) is my problem.

Romney is a menace that folks cannot see from the Internet.

I do not want the moderators to give me the boot for speaking more plainly than this.

I could though, I guarantee you that.

Boos for Romney’s $10k bet offer

Likely 2012 Republican voters are frowning on Mitt Romney’s controversial offer to make a $10,000 bet with GOP rival Rick Perry.

Forty-three percent of them say Romney’s effort to make that bet has diminished their view of him.

Here is the question we put to registered voters who say they’ll vote in their state’s 2012 Republican primary or caucus: “In last night’s Republican presidential debate, Mitt Romney offered to make a $10,000 bet with Rick Perry about whether something was or was not in Mitt Romney’s book. Does the offer of that bet improve or diminish your view of Mitt Romney?”

Here’s how they responded: 43% said the bet offer diminishes their view of Romney, 16% said it improves their view of him, 36% said it makes no difference, and 5% were undecided or had no opinion.

In the scientific telephone survey conducted last night, we questioned 582 registered voters nationwide who said they’d vote in their state’s Republican primary or caucus.  The poll has a margin of error of +/- 4%.  The full crosstabs for the poll: Poll Position crosstabs – Romney bet.
