Cincy, Xavier disgrace their sport and their schools

On the day after their basketball teams lost all self-control and sullied the reputations of their universities in the annual “Crosstown Shootout” game, the schools came back 24 hours later with punishments that further diminished the two. They took one of the worst on-court episodes in recent history and basically brushed it off with soft suspensions and hollow words.

Cincinnati’s Yancy Gates dropped an unsuspecting Kenny Frease with a sucker punch to the face, then punched another player, then tried like heck to go after several more but was restrained. He got only six games. If I were a Cincinnati alum, I wouldn’t want to see him wear the school uniform again. If I were a Cincinnati prosecutor, I’d consider filing assault charges.

Teammate Cheikh Mbodj, seen on videotape attempting to stomp on Frease as he was on the floor, also got six games. He should sit the rest of the season.

Octavius Ellis also was docked six games, and Ge’Lawn Guyn got one. No Bearcat will miss more than one Big East game.

There is a long and ignoble history of university leaders failing to step up and punish star athletes. This isn’t the first and won’t be the last, but it ranks among the most disappointing.

Tu Holloway, who was the prime instigator throughout the game, IMO, deserves more than a one game suspension for his outrageous post game comments alone, including:

“We’re grown men out there,” Holloway said, clearly misidentifying what constitutes manhood. “We’ve got a whole bunch of gangsters in that locker room. Not thugs, but tough guys out on the court.”

I can't believe that no one involved in this is going to miss any meaningful games. The penalties for fighting in the NBA are more strict than in the NCAA.

clearly misidentifying what constitutes manhood.

Which sums up in a nutshell the problem in certain parts of American society.

It’s a thug sport, played by thugs in a thug culture. To expect more is lunacy.

I had thought that UC had de-thugged their program a few years ago. Guess not...

“I had thought that UC had de-thugged their program a few years ago.”

The head thug (er, coach) left, but apparently the thug culture remained.

In 1965 I was a freshman at Xavier. During the UC/Xavier game, four Xavier freshman stood up and chanted, "UC sucks."

They were expelled.

Totally agree...
heard one of the coaches say his kids had to take off their jersies and earn the right to put them back on...
let’s see if he has the nads to do it now that the wimpy NCAA hasn’t got the guts to slap these kids down..
they need some tebowing time to realize that it’s just a game and these kids need some life lessons...

How are they supposed to learn what manhood is from their Mommas, Grammamas, and Aunties?

Yancy Gates is a punk-ass cowardly bitch!

The biggest man on the court and he can't stand man to man, has to throw a sucker-punch and then retreat back to his bench area.

I bet this is just how he acted back home with his gang.

Sucker punching people or out numbering them is the only way this big-ass punk would ever confront someone.

I caught the post-game press session after the show. The coach said a lot of big talk about punishment and who’s fit to ,wear the uniform and all that, but it’s apparent he was just blowing smoke. The two players from Xavier were thug ballers right out of the hood.

It was a terrible mistake to allow Holloway and the other player to be interviewed after the game. They did Xavier no favors. I was really surprised that no one “advised” them about what they should or shouldn’t say in the wake of the brawl. In my opinion Gates should miss a lot more than six games. The whole thing was sickening.

It would be interesting to see how much money the basketball programs at Cincinnati and Xavier bring into the schools.

Some reports said the Penn State football program brought 50 to 80 million dollars to that school.

If the basketball programs bring in 1/10 of the money Penn State football does, it is still a nice hunk of change.

Stars being booted from the team when big dollars are involved? My guess it is not going to happen.

The punishments so far was from the coaches/school If I heard correctly. The NCAA and Big East/A10 have yet to dish out anything more. The coach just showed that winning is more important that teaching kids a lesson. Yates shouldn’t play another game. Maybe the NCAA will get this one right then.

The chances of a player being suspended for on-court issues is in direct relation to the conference in which he plays. An Atlantic 10 player is less likely to be disciplined than a player from say the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

It's all about money.
