Occupy protesters try to disrupt ports; police make arrests

(CNN) -- Occupy protesters succeeded in shutting down overnight operations at California's port of Oakland on Monday night after a day of similar protests in several other U.S. cities.
The protests in Oakland have "disrupted workers trying to get to work and impaired the port's ability to operate," port spokesman Issac Kos-Read told CNN. Craig Merrilees, a spokesman for the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, said the port has told its members not to report for work for the overnight shift because of the mass of protesters at the port.
Earlier Monday, the port authority said in a statement there were "some delays of truck traffic" but said the port remained operational.
"Today's disruptions have been costly to port workers and their families in terms of lost wages and shifts," said Port of Oakland Executive Director Omar Benjamin, who suggested the movement should focus on "real solutions to the problems plaguing our economy."
On a normal night, several hundred people would be working the graveyard shift, Kos-Read said. Day shifts involve several thousand, he said. He said the protests have cost workers their wages, cost the city and region some revenue and could cause shipping firms to divert vessels to other ports.

I’ll bet the union workers will still get their hours. Nearly, every union contract has a civil unrest clause. Just like when power plant builders call in bomb threats when the weather is nasty. Whoho, full shift to go drinking with pay.
Geez! Why can’t the ILWU guys get out their baseball bats and axe handles and take care of this little problem their own selves.
Cuz the ILWU sympathize with the OWS hatred of companies and free enterprise.
Yes, they bite the hand that feeds them, for that is the nature of unions.
They line the pockets of the mobs that run them.
Because the unions are run by commies just like the Occupiers.

Until someone (mayor, I suppose) stands up to these clowns, they are going to keep this up. They’re drunk on the power of having an immediate effect, and they’re about as responsible as 3-year olds. Someone needs to put their foot down.
If it took money out of the pockets of ILA workers I’m all for it. If it took money out of the truck drivers pockets that I’m against. Majority of truckers going into and out of ports are non union.
I think I just saw a few freeloaders take direct hits to the face from a cop emptying his pepper spray container. Oh, they moved after that.
I wonder why the Occupy movement isn’t investigated with a possible RICO charge in mind since they want to disrupt legitimate commerce.
A week or so ago Drudge linked to an article saying how the city of Charlotte was trying to come up with ways to keep those occupy filth folks from camping near the where the DNC will have their convention.
Then I hear BO say at some college campus speech that they are the reason he ran in the first place. You just can't make this stuff up.
The OWS mob needs to take some remedial high school business and econ classes....

Every one of the ones caught should be horsewhipped and made to work picking lettuce or some such job.
I’d really rather see civilians pepper spray those blocking access.
It sends a message to them AND the whimpy cops and politicians.

A real AMERICAN would have told the members TO show up for work - with Louisville Sluggers, short lengths of pipe, and assorted handy little clubs, and tell the protestors either MOVE out of our way so we can make a living for our families, or wind up in the Emergency Room and see if Obamacare really works for you.
But....I forgot...this is a union...how silly of me to think they’re still Americans...
Why haven’t the longshoremen beaten the snot out of Occupiers yet?
That’s the point of the union. To stop any and all people from working.
