Applying While Asian
Jewish World Review ^ | December 16, 2011 | Rich Lowry

To check or not to check the Asian box? That is the pointed choice faced by Asian-American students applying to gain admission to what are supposed to be the most tolerant places on Earth, the nation's colleges. The Associated Press ran a report on Asian students of mixed parentage checking "white," if possible, on their applications to avoid outing themselves as Asians. The Princeton Review Student Advantage Guide counsels Asian-American students not to check the race box and warns against sending a photo.

In a culture that makes so much of celebrating ethnic heritage, especially of racial minorities, and that values fairness above all, Asian-American students think that they need to hide their ethnicity because the college admissions process is so unfair. If African-American motorists fear that they will be pulled over by the cops for the phantom offense of "Driving While Black," these kids worry about what will happen to them when "Applying While Asian."

Studies have demonstrated what every Asian parent and kid knows: Asians are discriminated against in the admissions process. They are disadvantaged vis-a-vis other minorities and perhaps vis-a-vis whites. The Center for Equal Opportunity, a think tank opposed to racial preferences, in a 2005 study looked at a male applying to the University of Michigan from in state who had no parental connection to the school. If he had a 1240 SAT score and a 3.2 GPA, he had a 92 percent chance of admission if black and 88 percent if Latino.

...

Stephen Hsu, a professor of physics at the University of Oregon and an outspoken critic of current admission practices, laments that Asians seem strangely accepting of the unfair treatment of their children. The official Asian-American groups tend to support anti-Asian quotas because they are captives of liberal orthodoxy before all else.

I’m seeing more and more Asian kids with “white” names, like John and David. Smart parents, doing their best to mask them.

They do seem to prefer blond girls, which due to my Asian addicition I can’t understand.

If wife #1 isn't Asian, wife #2 will be.

I leave the race blocks blank. If I am pressed to answer I check the `other` block and write in `human`

“... its intrusive and is the diametric opposite of the way we... are supposed to look at race”.

I couldn’t agree more. My youngest is in kindergarten and there was a discussion (brought forth by a book) about different languages. Some of the kids said they speak Spanish. One little girl spoke French. Well, a child asked my daughter if she spoke Chinese. Her response, “Do I look Chinese to you?! I speak English, of course”. My point is that she sees herself not as Chinese-American but fully American. IMHO, an American person (whether white, black, Asian, whatever) should be seen as American only. The secondary characteristics should be just that... secondary and simply an “outside” characteristic.

“Black” parents understand the advantage of having a “black name”.

If they really wanted to help their kids, they'd use names with apostrophes (like Lakawan'akesha) or other punctuation (L-sha (Ladasha)).

I want to see Obamas high school SATs. He is Asian you know because he came from Hawaii according to the story. If men can be women and little boys can be in girl scouts then I guess whites can be blacks. Just check the box!

I have two half-Japanese daughters. I check ‘other’ and let the state do the research themselves.

As a photographer and a photoshop person, I get a lot of Asian women contact me to have their eyes photoshopped to be more Caucasian in photos. Most of these photos are for college admissions. They feel that their Asian eyes hurt them. This really pains me because I think their eyes are very beautiful. Also, they change their names from their birth Asian name to a more European name, but they do keep their family name.Photobucket

Check the box and scream racism if they challenge your self-identification.

Blacks can be whites, Latinos can be Asian. The question is how did we arrive at this point? The ALgorism has finally come to fruition, ALL THAT IS UP IS DOWN!

The same way a Jamaican or Haitian is an “African American”.

What advantage? Why, “affirmative action” advantage, that’s what!

The very point of this article is that blacks need to score less than hispanics need to score less than whites need to score less than asians

to gain admission to college.

Also, on loan documents, “hispanic” or “african american” will get you higher loan approval rates for lower fico scores.

What is amazing is if you were able to age my five year old to about 19.... they are very close in appearance. I love their eyes as well and you have to admit.. Asian women have such silky, smooth skin. Gorgeous! We did choose a more American sounding name (although her first and last are more Gaelic). The reason is simple: her Chinese name was more of a number and identification. The last name was from the region, first name was more of a county and the middle name was based on appearance. Hence, her last and first Chinese name was shared by the other nine in her group. All of us chose American first names and most (all but two) chose American middle names.

Oh, ok. That WAS dumb of me not to see that.
I was referring to the fact that when authorities protect the Amish, we can usually tell anyway by their given names.

If wife #1 isn't Asian, wife #2 will be.

If you're referring to me, all 3 ex's were Asian.
My eldest son picked another big chested blond for his ex #2.
My youngest son is married to a beautiful blond. I think they are together for life.
The middle boy doesn't buy cows, but never seems to be without milk.
