Giant plumes of methane bubbling to surface of Arctic Ocean
The Sideshow - Yahoo! News ^ | Dec 14, 2011 | Eric Pfeiffer

Russian scientists have discovered hundreds of plumes of methane gas, some 1,000 meters in diameter, bubbling to the surface of the Arctic Ocean. Scientists are concerned that as the Arctic Shelf recedes, the unprecedented levels of gas released could greatly accelerate global climate change.

Igor Semiletov of the Russian Academy of Sciences tells the UK's Independent that the plumes of methane, a gas 20 times as harmful as carbon dioxide, have shocked scientists who have been studying the region for decades. "Earlier we found torch-like structures like this but they were only tens of meters in diameter," he said. "This is the first time that we've found continuous, powerful and impressive seeping structures, more than 1,000 metres in diameter. It's amazing."

Some suspect it has

Read about “The Great Dying”

The globull warmists will want to say the methane release is caused by globull warming, but perhaps ancient history will show it was the other way around

Yes.
The fact remains that they just do not know, as you said.
But here they are shrieking that governmental policy needs to change -in their monetary favor for research of course- immediately based on mere guesswork and fantasy.
That’s not science, that’s charlatanism and street magician purvey.

We can spend hundreds of millions studying this or just strike a match.

Whoo hoo! We are getting our atmosphere enriched with a lot of free plant food (methane oxidizes to CO2)!

Some plumes were a kilometer or more wide and the emissions went directly into the atmosphere — the concentration was a hundred times higher than normal."

And no one had a match!

I’m sure the Soviets...I mean Russians...will find a way to capture that methane, so they can pipe it to Western Europe...I mean save us all from global climate catastrophe.

methane, a gas 20 times as harmful as carbon dioxide

Sounds like good propaganda to get the Euros to burn the stuff after the Russkies build a pipeline carrying it to W. Europe. "Save the planet! Burn our gas!"

Just think of what we could accomplish energy wise if we could harvest that methane and use it for energy instead of just letting it bubble away?

And none of the globull worming “scientists” have thought to check the freezing point of methanated water.
If the methane has been bubbling up for quite some time under the ice, they have no idea what it would do.

And if we harvested the methane instead, we'd be reducing any effects it might have.
Instead, they want to cork cow butts with expensive devices because harming business and ruining economies are what they do best.
[Yes, dear lurking readers, science and enviro panels did indeed sate to develop a device to cork cow butts because in their estimation, cows release more methane than the methane sumps in he oceans, all hail the golden cow idol..again.]

Sorry, two parallel thoughts there.
And the IPCC admitted in their second spate of e-mails that the planet goes through cyclic changes, and that we'd all kill them if we found out that it was cyclic...

So, we are to believe that Mother Earth is now doing something that she has never in billions of years done ever before, and it is all our fault?

Does that about sum it up?

Or they can just call in the Russian air force to bomb the methane and save the earth, as in the really REEEaally bad SyFy movie “Ice Quakes” that is now roaming the network

Seriously, this could be not good

Is there technology to capture methane plumes measuring over a kilometer?

Gregory Ryskin theorizes that this type of methane release could affect the ocean flow and cause polar magnetic shift rapidly, as has happened in the past without as-yet known cause

Ah, a SyFy movie...let me guess....monstrously bad special FX...tight camera shots to hide the cheap warehouse sets...a 'war room' with 2 people using Windows 95 PCs somehow directing all the action, and a 30-year old mainframe in the background....and Dirk Benedict as the president. Close?

I remember someone theorizing that something like this was the problem with the “Bermuda Triangle” where ships would disappear. Large upswells could ignite and blow up a ship or, more likely, simply sink them.
