Proposed restrictions would shut most abortion clinics in the state
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette ^ | 12/16/2011 | Anya Sostek

Six years ago, Planned Parenthood of Western Pennsylvania bought and renovated a historic Downtown building that it uses for family planning services and abortion procedures.

If a bill passed this week by the state Legislature is signed into law, the organization would soon be in possession of a building wildly out of compliance with new rules holding abortion clinics to the same standards as ambulatory surgical centers.

"What we expect is that the majority of abortion providers in Pennsylvania would be shut down for some time," said Rebecca Cavanaugh, vice president for public affairs for Planned Parenthood of Western Pennsylvania. "For us the most cost-effective option would be to shut down and find a different building -- but we own this building."

The rules -- proposed in the wake of eight murder indictments against Philadelphia "house of horrors" abortion clinic provider Kermit Gosnell -- would likely require that abortion clinics expand their operating rooms and parking lots, install hospital-grade elevators and equip driveways for ambulances.

The cost would probably be "in the low millions," said Becky McDermott, executive director of Allegheny Reproductive Health Center in East Liberty, laughing that "just the expense of hiring an architect even giving us a consultation would bankrupt us."

Ms. McDermott said that the Gosnell case provided "the perfect opening" for opponents of abortion rights to restrict access to abortions under the guise of concern for women's health and safety.

The Post-Gazette could have done a little better job with this story. For example, they could/should mention that none of the abortion clinics in Pittsburgh are ambulance accessible.

Nonetheless, I'm happy my governoe & general assembly will make this the law of PA.

IMHO since abortion IS a surgical procedure the facilities who provide them should have to live up to the same requirements any other surgical facility needs to do.Why in the world would anyone wan to endanger women’s lives like this?

Good question. One of the clinics in Pgh was cited for not even having hot running water & the surgical instruments were bloody despite the staff telling inspectors that the instruments were clean. Disgusting.

The feminists & leftists who oppose this bill care more about the sacrifice of innocents than they do about womyn’s health, make no mistake about it.

What pizzes me off is that my donations to the Cancer Society was supposed to go to finding cancer cures NOT to planned parenthood or rather ‘planned abortions’. Grrr%#@*&#@*

The law is only useful if enforced. I suspect PP has tons of corrupt pols around to make sure this is not enforced.

The moral equivalent of telling the Nazis they could keep killing Jews if they make their killing centers more antiseptic.

The U.S. Constitution's final word on the matter:

"No person shall be deprived of life without due process of law."

"No State shall deprive any person of life without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws."

Just like in Kansas. The people got the legislature to pass laws restricting late term and underage abortions and the governor and her pet AG would not pursue or prosecute PP breaking these laws.

Then they set out to destroy a man who WAS attempting to enforce the law.

So in these cases, mandating coat hangers would actually improve conditions?

Has Susan Koman Foundation continued to fund Planned Parenthood? If so they shall have the money (as we see her foundation being supported by every Tom, Dick, and Mary in the U.S.). If not. This may really strain their resources and the Dems will continue to lie, cheat, steal, and just give them money.
