No doubt about it. Newt had some significant accomplishments in the past. He stood with Reagan in the 80’s to push back against the liberal Democrat agenda. In the 90’s Newt led the Republican Revolution and coauthored the Contract With America. That was then and this is now.

In the last decade Newt has moved away from conservatism to embrace big government Republicanism. He pronounced the era of Reagan is over and shown a progressive streak in his politics. Not to mention his ethical and moral problems.

My guess is, if Newt (or Romney) get the nomination America will be waking up on November 7th 2012 looking at 4 more years of Obama as potus.

Many of us who have fiercely criticized Gingrich before did so recognizing his talent but wishing he were a more dependable ideologue in the mold of Ronald Reagan, rather than the inconsistent intellectual who lectures us to distraction and often ends up alienating other conservatives.

Precisely. However, some of us aren't willing to settle.

“Per some posters...Newt has supported every liberal cause, moved away from conservationism.. blah, blah, blah.”

Spell check is not always a friend.

Newt has ALWAYS governed as a conservative.

Romney has ALWAYS governed as a liberal.

It is fairly safe at this point to say that the nominee will not be: Perry, Santorum, Bachmann, Paul, or Huntsman.

Your choice will be between a man who has always governed as a conservative and one who has always governed as a liberal.

-—”It is fairly safe at this point to say that the nominee will not be: Perry, Santorum, Bachmann, Paul, or Huntsman.”-—

NEVER underestimate the willingness of voters to go down with the ship of their candidate of choice.

The Establishment has a long, almost unblemished record of winning nominations in environments like this election cycle. As usual, nobody to the right of the Establishment pick is dropping out, no matter how little money or support they have; and most of the supporters of the also-rans simply CANNOT be budged. Even here at FR, everyone is desperately clinging to the hopes of a last-second, come-from-nowhere, unexplainable miracle for their candidate and the greatest comeback in the history of politics ever, EVER. And they absolutely will not budge.

It happens every election cycle: a splitting of Conservative votes over at least half a dozen Conservative candidates who cannot and will not win. Meanwhile, the Establishment pick wins because their side is smart enough not to do this. They rally around one candidate, circle the wagons, and refuse to split their vote.

Do NOT underestimate the ability of Conservative voters to go down with a sinking ship and justify it all the way until it hits the sand at the bottom of the ocean.

Circle the wagons and work HARD. Mitt Romney must be defeated!!!!!

We had the prospect of a wonderful candidate last time in Duncan Hunter, but instead he couldn’t even get off the ground.

We went into this nightmare named John McCain....a nice man, a veteran, a former POW....who didn’t have one ounce of fight left in his bones, and who was a liberal in all but pro-life and fiscal sanity.

John McCain was better than Mitt Romney, the nation rejected Mitt Romney, but Mitt is Back at the behest of the Establishment GOP.

More than NOT voting for Romney, I promise that I will work against him in primary or general. It will be a victory to see him lose at any level.

I agree entirely. Newt has a list of impressive conservative accomplishments. Romney has none. I still don’t think Newt is the right choice but if it comes down to him I will have no problem supporting him where as with Romney it just isn’t going to happen.

Romney isn’t a conservative and Newt lost his conservatism but just acts like he’s one now - its a lose-lose either way

Newt has ALWAYS governed as a conservative. It’s a matter of record. Romney has NEVER governed as a conservative, but always as a liberal. That, too, is a matter of record.

You’d know he’d beat on Obama like a red-headed stepchild, but could you trust him when he got into office?

Trusting Gingrich in office will be a lot easier than trusting the dunce we have in office now.
