Barney Frank: Obama would win 300-plus electoral votes against Gingrich
The Hill ^ | 12-17-11 | Bob Cusak

Rep. Barney Frank is predicting that President Obama would easily win a general election against Newt Gingrich, but stopped short of guaranteeing that Obama would eclipse his 2008 victory.

The retiring Massachusetts Democrat recently said that a Gingrich nomination “would be the best thing to happen to the Democrats since Barry Goldwater.”

Asked for a prediction on electoral votes, Frank this week told The Hill, “The thing is [Gingrich] could carry most of the South.” He said Obama's count would be “in the 300s” against the Georgia Republican.

To win the White House, 270 electoral votes are needed.

Obama won 365 electoral votes in 2008 against Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who captured 173. In 1964, President Lyndon Johnson won 486 electoral votes to Goldwater’s 52.

Earlier this fall amid Texas Gov. Rick Perry's surge in the GOP primary polls, Frank said Mitt Romney would present a more difficult challenge for Democrats in the general election.

I think they REALLY FEAR Gingrich speaking plain truth ...

Exactly. There's a reason Barney Frank is saying this. And it's not because he believes the lie. He's trying to negatively influence gullible voters.

a Gingrich nomination “would be the best thing to happen to the Democrats since Barry Goldwater.”

Then why say it? If my opponent is on the verge of doing something that will benefit my side, i'm surely not going to point out what a disaster it'd be for him.

It's obvious that Gingrich makes the democrats (and establishment republicans) nervous, for he is unpredictable, uncontrollable, and would unquestioningly shake up the status quo if elected. Romney is the safe pick for the ruling class, one who wouldn't stray too far from our current headings should he beat Obama. Then after 4 or 8 years the dems would be able to pick up where they left off without too much trouble.

Frank’s probably right...the biggest problem Gingrich has is that nobody likes him...personally. He maybe be smart, competent, a great debator, but nobody likes him...He is bombastic, arrogant, pompous, conceited, looks down upon people, and all around, not likable. He’s the male Hillary Clinton and Al Gore combined-—and, let’s be honest, you have to be likable to be president. Just like at the current one, he’s totally incompetent and ridiculous, but probably a great guy to have a beer with.

Yeh, and Hitler will be our next defense secretary.

Frankly I don’t care if people like Newt or not...he’s got the goods we need as a nation to get rid of those who are taking it down...and i won’t expect him to be liked while he’s doing so.

Democrates are going to put out there all those who won’t be staying in Washington this next cycle....they have nothing to loose political since they’re out of there.

Therefore anything they might say is rubbish....not to be believed or heeded for more than being the pit bulls for the democrates and Obama.

I don't think this time around it's going to be about POPULARITY. Most people are looking for SOMEONE to actually represent the "will of the people"

It may take someone with the kind of "piss & vinegar" that Newt has to get that done.

I think I can sum it up: Newt has “Little Man Syndrome”.

I’ve never cared much for him, and still don’t. I’ll vote for him, of course, if he gets the nomination.............but I don’t think he’s our best choice.

Obama can’t win. It’s that simple, Obama can’t win this time. Everybody’s seen him and what he can do. Obama can’t win.

Newt has some very strong points. But his Gallup scores among women are worthy of a horror film. He may well be unelectable - even against the Demon-in-Chief. Romney is unelectable for other reasons. We need to unearth some of Obama’s “secret” records soon, to give us an extra boost.
