REPORTING FROM CAIRO -- Troops in riot gear stormed Tahrir Square on Saturday as clashes with protesters demanding an immediate end to Egypt’s military rule continued for a second day.

At least nine demonstrators have been killed and 361 others wounded since the clashes began Friday, the Health Ministry said.

...

The clashes began when military police broke up a protest encampment outside the Cabinet building following scuffles with demonstrators who were enraged about the arrest and beating of an activist. The troops withdrew late Friday afternoon, but confrontations continued overnight.

On Saturday, military police returned to disperse the crowds still in the streets, chasing them toward Tahrir Square.

Television footage showed both sides hurling rocks at each other, and protesters tossing gasoline bombs at government buildings during running street battles.

Getting rid of Mubarak was easy. A whole lot more blood will flow before the military hands power over to the mobs.

Thanks Pan_Yan.

Meanwhile, Syria's Assad has murdered at least 5,000 Syrians (some by torture) since March. Oh, but that's okay.

It's amusing that the group in charge -- "military rule" -- wouldn't even *be* in charge had the earlier riots not resulted in the ouster of Mubarak.

Good time for Israel to yank back the Sinai.

IMHO the military has always been in charge in Egypt. They let Mubarak be the figure head as long as he stayed out of their money making operations. And they were pretty quick to let him go after 30 years when it was convenient to appease the masses.

Maybe the Egyptian military isn't about to cede power to the Muslim Brotherhood?

I think the Egyptian military will do whatever it takes to keep its power. If that means they'll have to murder the Muslim Brotherhood by the hundreds or thousands, they will.

Civil War in Egypt? A good possibility exists because the Muslim Brotherhood is closer now to power than they ever have been. They're not receptive at being told “No. Now is not the time.”

If the military stays in power, that will be better than hving the Islamists take over. But can they? The Generals in Turkey, who had run the country for almost a century, let the Islamists form a government, and now the Islamists are in control and some of the generals were jailed or executed.

And meantime, the Generals are giving the Islamists a free hand at burning churches and murdering Copts, and even helping them out. Not good. Far better if Mubarak had passed things along to his son, with the Generals controlling things in the background.

Thank you, Obama, for enabling this bloodshed.

In my country, thug cops beat protesters.

In your country, thug protesters beat cops.

If Egypt breaks up into a non-state filled with wandering nomads, I won’t shed any tears. Dittos for Syria.

Looks like the “Arab Spring” was a PR stunt. How odd that no one in the media is there to see the Arab “Fall”.

Perhaps because it doesn’t fit the script?
