FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) --

The young Army intelligence specialist accused of passing government secrets spent his 24th birthday in court Saturday as his lawyers argued his status as a gay soldier before the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell" played an important role in his actions.

Lawyers for Pfc. Bradley Manning began laying out a defense to show that his struggles as a gay soldier in an environment hostile to homosexuality contributed to mental and emotional problems that should have barred him from having access to sensitive material.

Manning is accused of leaking hundreds of thousands of sensitive items to the anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks, including Iraq and Afghanistan war logs, State Department cables and a classified military video of a 2007 American helicopter attack in Iraq that killed 11 men, including a Reuters news photographer and his driver.

But didn't they just argue that there have always been gays in the services?

How could the environment been so hostile as to cause this one gay man to betray his nation when there are many other gay people about to support him?

Perhaps homosexuality wasn't his only psychological problem.

Somebody still needs to explain to me why a SPC 4 had a “need to know” all of the information he stole and forwarded to WikiLeaks. A lot more people than this guy need to be held accountable.

He betrayed his uniform and his country because he was upset that he couldn’t prance around like a deviant.

His sexual orientation played an important role in espionage? Interesting.

It will probably play a much more important role in his being incarcerated for the next 70 years, once they let him out of solitary.

Unfortunately, this guy is going to play every card in the book (gay, “right to know”, etc). If he gets off with anything less than 20 years, kiss informations security goodbye. Sadly, in today’s climate, there’s a good chance he’ll get off with a slap on his limp wrist.

...his struggles as a gay soldier in an environment hostile to homosexuality contributed to mental and emotional problems...

Homosexuality was chief among his mental and emotional problems.

His "mental and emotional problems" are part of being queer and he shouldn't have been in the service to begin with.

No matter how many rules they change this mess just isn't going to work out well.

I read three recent MSM articles about Manning - and not one mentioned that he was a homosexual.

They completely ignored it.

As it was for most of the Cambridge Five. Odd that so little is made of the two proclivities.

It's the Army's fault.

The little faggot freaked out when he got dumped by his boyfriend. What does the repeal of DADT have to do with that?
