NBC/WSJ poll: Romney Struggles With Primary Voters, Gingrich With General Electorate

By Mark Murray, Deputy Political Director, NBC News

WASHINGTON - Exactly three weeks until the first Republican presidential nominating contest in Iowa, front-runners Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney have two different challenges, according to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.

Romney faces a challenge with the Republican primary electorate, trailing Gingrich nationally by 17 percentage points as nearly two-thirds of Republicans view him as either liberal or moderate.

Gingrich, meanwhile, faces a challenge with the general electorate, as half of all voters say they wouldn’t vote for him in November, and as he trails President Barack Obama by more than 10 percentage points in a hypothetical contest -- compared with Romney’s two-point deficit versus the Democratic incumbent.

“Romney has not caught on [with Republican voters],” says Democratic pollster Peter D. Hart, who conducted this survey with Republican pollster Bill McInturff. “And Gingrich is so deeply flawed.”

“I think the Republican Party for the next four months is on the razor’s edge,” Hart adds. “Here is a year where they have a superlative opportunity to capture the White House. The question is whether they will self-destruct.”

Comparison to Reagan don’t cut it. The demographics have since changed, no more Cold War, and Reagan was super-telegenic that would magnetize women voters in the crucial 19-49 demographic. Check the internals of the poll. Without the independents swinging onto our side, we lose. Newt loses this key demographic in a landslide against Obama. It’s the arithmetic.

You nailed it. Little gain in winning the primary battle and losing the war. 4 more years of Obama and the nation is over the abyss.

This appears to run contrary to your tagline.

Nice try. Thanks for playing, but you can sit down now. If those Palin voters and Cain voters didn't actually like Newt they would now be "undecided"-- That means they don't have a favorite, for you flunkies in Rio Linda.

MSNBC, really? When are you going to stop letting the media lead you around by the nose?

Giving up on Huntsman already PMSNBC?

Try as you may, you will NOT be able to editorialize Romney into the general race either.

The way this thing read Newt can win the Primary, but not the election.

What makes MSNBC so sure that Romney can win the electorate.

The fact is they are spouting BS,because they want Romney as our candidate. They know they can beat Romney, Newt is an unknown. This is MSNBC people , think about that. They want Romney. They are the enemy.

Romney cannot win the electorate any better than Newt can. For every Republican voter who says they will not vote for Newt there is a Republican voter who says they will not vote for Romney. Fact is we will vote for Ben Dover before we will vote for Obama.Do not let MSNBC fool you, Newt frightens them. Romney doesn’t.

In Jan 1980 Gallup had Carter led Reagan 62% to 33%, looks like Gingrich is in great shape.

http://www.uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=115543.0

BTW without the internals who many dems, pubs and independents, adults, registered voters, likely voters the results may or may not be crap.

So when we look at the internals we see the following:

Strong Democrat ........................... 19
Not very strong Democrat ............. 11
Independent/lean Democrat .......... 14
Strictly Independent ....................... 16
Independent/lean Republican ........ 13
Not very strong Republican ........... 10
Strong Republican ......................... 14
Other (VOL) ................................... 2

Later they separate out registered voters who identify as republican, so the poll is of adults, the sampled is skewed to dems in the sampling and they don’t even check for likely voter status.

IOW this result is about as skewed to Obama as they could get.

Total BS, don’t be a sheep think for yourself and don’t believe what the elites in the media say.

I know you wanted this to be a discouraging post for Newt supporters, but it is miles beyond what I expected. The fact that he is equal with Obama, when Obama has had as much fawning press as Newt has had vicious press, makes this number astounding. Once the party gets behind him totally, focuses on Obama, like they should have been all along, and AFTER the debates, I think Newt is headed to 1600. This heartens me.

There’s only one poll that counts, and it isn’t one conducted by a left wing of the dnc!

Wishful thinking on your part. The fact of the matter is that Newt wasn't even on anybody's radar until those women started coming out of the woodwork and making accusations against Cain.

And anyway I seriously doubt that Newt will ever be able to draw crowds like THIS...

Look, Newt’s policies are super. The best. But if he cannot win (think Independents) what purpose is there? At the end of the day we need a wining candidate and unless Iowa gives us a Perry, Bachman, or Santorum, then we have little choice with Romney (unviable to the base) and Newt (poison to 50% voters).

Poison Poll! look at the numbers

Q22 Generally speaking, do you think of yourself as (ROTATE:) a Democrat, a Republican, an independent, or
something else? (IF “DEMOCRAT” OR “REPUBLICAN,” ASK:) Would you call yourself a strong
(Democrat/Republican) or not a very strong (Democrat/Republican)? (IF “NOT SURE,” CODE AS “NOT
VERY STRONG DEMOCRAT/REPUBLICAN.”) (IF “INDEPENDENT,” ASK:) Do you think of yourself as
closer to the Republican Party, closer to the Democratic Party, or do you think of yourself as strictly
independent? (IF “NOT SURE,” CODE AS “STRICTLY INDEPENDENT.”)
Strong Democrat ........................... 19
Not very strong Democrat ............. 11
Independent/lean Democrat .......... 14
Strictly Independent ....................... 16
Independent/lean Republican ........ 13
Not very strong Republican ........... 10
Strong Republican ......................... 14
Other (VOL) ................................... 2
Not sure ....................................... 1
