Rick Perry making modest gains in Iowa
Boston Herald ^ | December 20, 2011 | Dave Montgomery

..Fueled by a bigger pile of campaign donations than most of his rivals, Perry is blitzing Iowa in a 42-town bus tour that enables him to personally deliver his campaign message and capitalize on his skills at retail politics. Team Perry is also saturating the state with radio and TV ads and plans to import hundreds of Texans, including Republican state officials and pro-Perry lawmakers, to woo caucus-goers.

"We’re certainly hearing his name a lot with radio and TV commercials, probably a lot more than the other candidates," said Dr. Bill Davidson of Bettendorf in eastern Iowa. "I like the commercials, particularly the one about his not being afraid to speak about his faith."

Davidson said last week that he is undecided but is likely to vote for Perry or former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania.

"Those are my two guys," he said. "It may come right down to caucus day."

Craig Robinson, a former political director for the Iowa Republican Party, said that Perry’s wall-to-wall campaigning appears to be giving him a bit of a boost. "I think people are starting to give him a second look," said Robinson, who is founder and editor-in-chief of The Iowa Republican, a political website. "His bus tour is good for him, and I think it will help him."

...In one silver-lining aspect in his fall from the top, Perry has escaped the harsh scrutiny that falls on front-runners, giving him more freedom to promote key themes. Robinson said a fellow Republican who approached him at a recent political event told him that he initially supported Perry, then switched his allegiance to Gingrich and is now back to supporting the Texas governor.

Thanks for posting this. Perry has apologized often and profusely for his “heartless” comment; I accept his apologies and move on, certain that he is a solid Constitutional conservative with a decade-long record of leadership. And I love his promise that he will have the border sealed within a year.

As for Newt, I find him far too untrustworthy. When Hannity asked him about his support for cap and trade, he replied that he now “wouldn’t go QUITE that far” to combat global warming. That, along with his new book about manmade global warming (coming out AFTER the election), is fully enough to disqualify him, IMO. Anyone who supports that mess will help to bankrupt the country. Perry, OTOH, has called it what it is-—a hoax.

Glad to hear it because Gov. Perry has a strong, conservative stand against illegal immigration.

To me that should be the deal breaker for conservatives.

TRUST.

You can’t trust Newt.

Ok, that sounds a bit better. maybe I need to check him again. I just remembered his few public comments when he entered the race and my recollection was that he opposed both fence and e-verify. He did not push az like state laws in TX, a gop state, so I took it as an opposition.

If he really is committed to enforcement he would be a great candidate. I’m not too worried about debates.

I have to disagree that he has a conservative stance on immigration I think he's trying to play both sides right now. Maybe Perry/Bachmann ticket or Santorum.

I could easily support Perry or Bachman, or Santorum.

Too bad for Perry. Without La Raza policies he would be leading and I would be his most loyal fan.

Nice turd -- but it's fake.

Gov Rick Perry spoke to LaRaza about the drug cartels, shared responsibility of border security and that it is Washington's responsibility to secure the border -- that the Federal government should support the military, deliver the mail and secure the border -- and they aren't doing their job. [HE RECEIVED a lot of applause] He spoke of the money Texas spends securing the border, that it must be sealed and then we can sustain legitimate commerce...He told about protecting the sanctity of the vote and strengthening our shared values, family, faith, hard work -- they are TEXAS values and we should unite as citizen's of one Nation under God and concentrate on what unites us. He told his Cuervo joke and they found it funny unlike the Liberal Latino Leaders Give Perry Lukewarm Response (or more likely they'd heard it before).

Then you need to make your case for saying that.

Exactly. How soon conservatives (convince themselves to) forget.

I am leaning towards casting my vote in the caucus to Perry, trying to get myself used to it. Like you said, we have 2 weeks. Just this morning I thought ‘maybe I will just write-in Palin’...first time in a long time my heart felt good when thinking about this upcoming caucus...

I think the RCP numbers at this time are pretty well meaningless. Pay attention to Iowa because Iowa is the only one really paying attention right now. Everyone else is more concerned with bowl games and Christmas shopping.

If Perry takes care of business in Iowa then everything else will follow. Right now his Iowa numbers are moving in the right direction.

I am a voter holding my nose a little to cast a vote for Perry. It's not up to me to make the case for Perry on his illegal immigration stances it's Perry's responsibility to make the case to the voter. By the looks of the polling his problem is he hasn't made that case very clear.

“Right down to the DNC talking points.”

But voters are starting to look at the facts.

The ugly spectre of FOX News freezing out Perry has them scratching their heads and wondering why.

I wish people would get over the notion that Perry is against illegal immigration enforcement. He tried hard to shut down sanctuary cities, even called a special session.

Sheriff Joe has endorsed him and you know how he feels about illegals.

Haven’t seen you post before. Have you been lurking?

Why do you choose to make a sarcastic personal remark to CW?

We’re talking about the future president here.
