Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama's approval rating, a crucial indicator of his reelection chances, is on the rise, according to a new national survey.
A CNN/ORC International Poll out Tuesday also indicates that the partisan battle over extending the payroll tax cut may be partially responsible for the jump in the president's numbers.

According to the survey, 49% of Americans approve of the job Obama's doing in the White House, up five points from last month, with 48% saying they disapprove, down six points from mid-November. The 49% approval rating is the president's highest since May, when his number hit 54% thanks to a bounce following the killing of Osama bin Laden. Since then, in CNN polling, Obama's approval rating has hovered in the mid-40s.
"President Barack Obama's approval rating appears to be fueled by dramatic gains among middle-income Americans," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "The data suggest that the debate over the payroll tax is helping Obama's efforts to portray himself as the defender of the middle class."

Uh, hello, “end of war” in Iraq? Too bad for Obama, he doesn’t have many more wars to end.
As long as people pay them attention polls will keep lying to people. Ignore polls, all of them.
Time for Barry’s toadies in the state run “media” to start polishing up his image. We’ve got a big election coming up doncha know.
All BS, It’s CNN (The Communist News Network)!!!
Rasmussen still has him circling the bowl in the very low 40’s
Rush talked about this today. The sampling numbers are skewed. They under sampled the Republicans for instance.
Maybe Republicans (including many here on this forum) need to stop slinging mud at all our guys (and girls) and focus that rage at the one destroying this country.
That’s great CNN~!!
All yur listeners will be happy!!
both of them!
CNN-Obama trying to justify to the unwashed how good The Anointed/Appointed/Selected One truly is.
Sure, just flat out lie, and make up anything you want.
The poll was taken in the White House. Respondent Michelle Obama was unavailable - so the one vote from BO represents 50% of those polled on a daily basis.
ROFLOL at how CNN tries to put a positive spin on Obama’s poor polling numbers. What this really shows is that more than half of our citizens do not approve of Obama and can not wait until that intruder is out of our White House.
Amazingly, Obama’s ‘dramatic’ improvement among the ‘middle class’ comes in tandem with news that his campaign is abandoning attemtps to win support of blue collar whites, because that demographic is deemed to be beyond his reach.
Ahhhhhhhhhhh I see CNN is posting the usual BS..they are the Communist News Network for a reason
I know these polls are BS. I think he is in the low 30% realistically. But these BS polls are ticking me off...
Don't think that's going to stop anytime soon unfortunately...it's Primary season and seems to go with the territory. Everybody wants their candidate to win regardless of the arguments opposing them.
What we can do is hope a few will get behind the most electable candidate who can win against Obama and get the work done in Washington ASAP when they get there....and has the tools to get it done. That alone eliminates some of them.
As someone here most astutely observed-Polls are for strippers.
Rush: “Don’t Doubt Me: Obama’s Approval Rating Will Rise and the Jobless Rate Will Drop — All Designed to Weaken Your Resolve”
As bad as this guy has screwed EVERYTHING up, how can his approval be anything over 10%?
4th Best President, EVAH!!!
Just ask him, he’ll tell ya!
This might explain. The other reason that the LMSM claims is that Obama looks like a hero on the payroll tax issue. I personally doubt this because there hasn’t been that much of a media stir over it.
Obama is a sitting duck (dinosaur?) and the GOP is like the guy in Jurassic Park who's got his gun caught in a net.
Time to cook those numbers Democrats...we have a country to destroy, I mean, an election to win.
Oh Praise Marx, Dear Leader’s approval has returned! (Coincidentally just in time for election, I wonder if we will see the crying and fainting masses like in 2008?)
Do not under estimate Obama. He is a clever dirty infighter who will do anything to retain power. Look at how he dispatched Cain and now is working on Newt. To remove him from office we will have to bite, scratch, and eye gouge using every dirty trick in the books. Fight to win because they will
One or more of the 6 goobers running will decide that they are “special” and go third party.
his numbers go up when he goes on vacation D’oh
“Time for Barrys toadies in the state run media to start polishing up his image.”
Just HOW do you polish a TURD?!
You CAN’T pick it up by the CLEAN end...
It is a poll of American adults, and not of voters. Voter polls tend to favor conservative issues and candidates.
And I dare say they under sampled people with a lick of common sense.
Jimmah and Billybob are like, come on Obama you can do it..you can be the worst President in modern history!
Say something like you are possibly the greatest President ever..oh wait, you already did that.
Another BS poll staged by MSM to get Obama re-elected. MSM is on full “brainwash” techniques.
'nuff said.
If the Republicans continue to push people with sordid or questionable pasts, it will eventually weigh heavily on the attitude of the electorate.
International poll.. Ahhh, good pick up.
Ignoring polls is idiotic. Doing that is basically just sticking your head in the sand because you don't like the results.
Any one poll can be skewed, but if you use something like the RCP average you can see clear trends. There is no doubt that Hussein is trending up. ABC/WaPo now has him at 49%, CNN now shows him at 49% and Rasmussen's poll of likely voters gives Obama a 47% approval rating and has been steady for days.
The polls are not all wrong - particularly presidential approval polls. Primary polling is difficult and can be wildly off target, but that is not true for basic approve/disapprove numbers.
Obama is winning the public relations war at the moment. Our candidates are savaging one another and Hussein's class warfare shtick is helping him. There is no way around it. It doesn't help that our House Republicans are now fighting their own lonely battle, meanwhile the Senate Republicans have largely gone home and agreed to the 2 month payroll tax cut deal. House Republicans may be right on principle, but if taxes go up in January because they refused to accept what the Senate passed, the public is simply going to turn more against us. Boehner and McConnell didn't have their ducks in a row, and Obama and his congressional allies at least seem to be on the same page.
Just show how stupid is the voting public.
Liberal social psychologists manipulating the sheople, again, with statistics.
Sure it has because we all know CNN and the regime is all about the truth.........................../major sarc
Demographics - very simple.
The rating is a poll and these can be massaged easily. Look at how the unemployment rate is massaged too.
“Be-sure-to-drink-your-Kool-Aid.”
Voters enter the polling booth, make their choices only on what is of individual concern to them, on the single opportunity they have in making things better for themselves.
If they're under economic distress, reeling under the financial hardships wrought about by Obama's design to destroy America, they will vote their anger, frustration as those whose Obama's policies have been so disastrous to. To read how Obama has helped others within the middle class when you're doing "not nearly as well" will only serve to antagonize, alienate those who don't see themselves as part of those who've been helped.
That will happen when you get free campaign advertising on 60 Minutes.
We Are The 49%
Looking at the internals though, you can see the skew - especially in a poll where white males don't appear to be terribly fond of the Tea Party - yeah, right.
Maybe these poll numbers are not taking the “Bradley Effect” into consideration.
