(CNN) -- A Louisiana lawmaker wants the National Guard to patrol the streets of New Orleans after a toddler who was four days shy of her second birthday was shot and killed in a drive-by. "She was out here as a innocent bystander. She's dead now," said Rufus Ruck, the child's cousin. Keira Holmes Gordon was gunned down in a double shooting at the B. W. Cooper Housing development on Sunday. She was one of two people hit when gunmen from two separate cars opened fire on a man who was standing nearby. According to police, the man ran into a crowded courtyard full of kids trying to escape the barrage of bullets. He was hit several times but survived the shooting. The toddler was pronounced dead at the scene. She would have turned 2 on Thursday. State lawmaker Austin Badon Jr., who represents part of Orleans Parish, said crime is spiraling out of control and wants the government to step and help control the violence.

The governor could declare “Martial Law”, tho there probably are not enough national guardsmen in Louisiana to clean up New Orleans.

One of my earliest memories was looking at the “Panama City News Herald” and seeing a picture of troops burning tables in the street. I asked my Mother what that was and she said it was “martial law in Phenix City, Alabama”.

It was many years before I really understood what had happened there.

Then he needs to ask Obama to put NO under martial law and they can share the political fall out.

sure thing....A non-black, Republican Governor sending troops into the Chocolate City.

That ought to play well in the press.

The shooting is a symptom, I think you need new lawmakers.

Society itself is the problem.

My little town has a virtually zero crime rate and as a result, a county patrol car rolls through here without stopping about once a week.

I know I shouldn’t ask, but what is wrong with the police in N.O.? That’s their job, not the military.

It goes something like this. High crime areas result in both real and imagined aggressive police behavior. This results in the ACLU and race baiters coming to town and demanding that police take sensitivity and diversity training which results in people screaming that police don't do enough.

Actually New Orleans needs more animal control to capture and euthanize the feral animals that infest the place.

If black leaders in this nation would start addressing this issue of black-on-black crime....and stop the neo-KKK nonsense on white and Asian Americans....these senseless crimes will stop

Even with many rural white areas being racked by crystal meth use and production....there still is not the homicide levels like in the black community

“Rufus Ruck”? Is that a real name? Did Al Capp write this?

Don’t be troubled, Rufus. Perpetual martial law has arrived:

“If it wasn't for the graft, we wouldn't have a police force at all.”

That's a joke, son! BilLies

Senator Beauregard Claghorn didn't say it and neither did George “Kingfish” Stevens...but the words would have fitted into either of their routines.

Radio used to be great.

I'll tell you whats wrong with the police in New Orleans, they are corrupt as hell! I lived down there (3rd ward) in 94, and 95 and I can confirm that. I once had a N.O police officer grab me by my throat, and pin me to a dumpster, he took out a night stick and threatened to break my G*% D*%# head if I lied to him again ( I denied that I had urinated in public, which I was innocent)

So do you do what's right or worry about political correctness?

George Bush did that before, during and after Katrina.

How'd that work out for him?

BTW...I made no comment on the right/wrong of it, that I'm aware of. Just speculating on what the PC police would do with such a move.
