Power Plant Closures Due to Environmental Regulations to Take Toll on Towns
Published December 20, 2011 | Associated Press

For more than 90 years, the coal-fired power plant in Glen Lyn, Va., has been churning out electricity and contributing to local prosperity. Of late, it has generated nearly a quarter of the revenue for the $1 million budget of the town.

Yet when the plant ultimately shuts down to comply with new federal air pollution regulations by the end of 2014, says Town Manager Howard Spencer, so too might the community of 200.

"If the town lost all of that revenue," he says, "we would struggle to even continue to be incorporated."

An Associated Press analysis has found that more than 32 mostly coal-fired power plants in a dozen states will be forced to close because of the new, more stringent regulations. Another 36 plants are at risk of closing.

I sure hope that a Republican president elected in 2012, working with Republicans in Congress, can pass legislation to get rid of inane rules such as forcing power plants to shut down. And, in general, rein in the EPA. How is it that the EPA has so much power? Aren’t cabinet level agencies such as EPA under the oversight of Congress and the President? How is it that EPA became a power unto itself?????

Here in NC, Buck Steam plant which is right down the road from me is being shutdown. Duke power is building a natural gas fired plant on the same property. Duke tried to raise rates 17% but have backed down to 7% after public outcry. Of course, most of the public is too stupid to realize why their rates are skyrocketting, prefering to blame it all on Duke CEOs. Duke is coincidently also guaranteeing something like $10 million for the DNC in Charlotte.

It’s a great opportunity for them to jack up their rates.

I fully belive that they may have only delayed some limits rather than eliminated them.

I suspect major concessions will sound like: “we were going to ask for the whole world, but scaled it back 5 continents and 3 oceans.

No need to worry, we’ll produce all the power we needs by cluttering the landscape with zillions of wind turbines and solar panels. /s

Aren’t there also new regulations that limit using wood stoves or even require replacing wood stoves with inefficient ones?

Every plant operator in every state should refuse to shut down the plants.

If ANY state had a leader with a true love of Liberty and a reverence for our Constitution, it would happen.

Such a leader would post the National Guard outside the plant, order ALL EPA facilities in the state shut down and dare the Feds to do something.

Sadly, there no NO governors today who has anywhere near the boldness and convictions of any of our Founders. We are being led by weak men.

3 plants to close in Wisconsin ... rolling blackouts predicted ... new manufacturing jobs will close, no new hires, death of many elderly due to winter cold exposure ... and so on ... change we all can believe in.

I think all the new woodstoves have to be more energy efficient. On the bright side that means less smoke. So in a SHTF situation its a good thing.

If I recall correctly, these new regulations include ever decreasing carbon emissions caps.

“budget of $1,000,000 “

Schools are paid out of county budgets. I tried googling to find the town budget (incorporated “towns” are still part of counties in VA, as opposed to incorporated “cities” which are independeant). I could only find tax rates associated w/the county (Giles).

Presuming gov’t abuse like everywhere else, I’d venture a guess that 1 mill covers 500k of wage and benefits of 2 guys. Or perhaps it’s 333k for 2 guys w/the remaining 333 covering the retirement of their predecessors.

As Presidential-Historian(Michael Beschloss)said to Don Imus:”Obama Is Probably The Most Intelligent Man To Ever Occupy The Oval Office”.Imus then asked him what Obama’s IQ was.Bescloss, hesitated and replied that he didn’t know but it was very high.

Bill Clinton must be really pissed! He used to be the smartest president ever as well as the first black president. Now Obama has upstaged him on both fronts.
