PARKERSBURG - A temporary extension of the Social Security payroll tax has infuriated a West Virginia senator.
Sen. Joe Manchin said the two-month extension is a failure for the American people.
"I am furious and disgusted that anyone could imagine this stopgap measure is the best that Congress could offer hard-working Americans, seniors and the unemployed," Manchin, a Democrat, said. "Delaying a decision for another two months makes no sense, especially when Congress will not be working for one of those months. Only in Washington would you get a month off for failing to do your job. West Virginians and all Americans deserve better, and I will not play these games."
The 2 percent cut from 6.2 percent to 4 percent was enacted in 2010 and will expire on Dec. 31. The amendment approved by the Senate on Saturday extends the cut for another 60 days and will be taken up by the House of Representatives.
"While some at the highest level are playing partisan politics, I was willing and prepared to stay in Washington through the holidays and January to find a reasonable compromise. I was willing to compromise because I believe that both sides can give up ground to do the right thing for the people who sent us here," Manchin said in a statement. "I had been working hard with my colleagues in the House and the Senate to develop a long-term solution that will ultimately stop this government's irresponsible raid on Social Security, while also addressing the need to responsibly extend unemployment insurance and ensure that seniors can see their doctors.

Damn: A Democrat that makes sense.
Note to Joe Manchin: Kick Harry Reid out!
He’s all talk most of the time. We’ll see how he actually votes.
This guy should go into the Smithsonian.
A DemoRat that shows responsibility to the people and his job....
This must be a satire.....?
Two months? TWO MONTHS? And we would have to have this conversation all over again?
The Senate was offered a version of the bill, passed by a majority in the House, that would have made the extension a full year. Yet Harry Reid killed it, not even acknowledging the Republicnas would have done something for which they may have been due some credit.
Harry Reid is the real obstructionist here. Why will nobody say it aloud?
The Republican-majority House has actually done a great deal to get the country going again, but whatever they send to the Senate, just lies and moulders, dying a death by neglect on the part of the Harry Reid agenda.
Harry Reid, the snarling dog who lies in the manger and does not allow the horses to feed. Yet the hay does him little benefit, as it is not even the most comfortable place to lie down.
Lead, follow, or get the H*ll out of the way.
If the GOP was smart (...) they would really play this up, and force the Senate Dems in tough races to come back and vote for the House Republicans’ plan... or else be subjected to endless ads slamming them on this.
A democrat senator who’s not a lockstepper? What’s the catch?
The extension is a continuation of an irresponsible raid on Social Security.
“Harry Reid is the real obstructionist here. Why will nobody say it aloud?”
Yep. He’s a key target they need to focus on- (the creepy old, mean guy with the child’s voice).
“A democrat senator whos not a lockstepper? Whats the catch?”
He’s up for re-election next year.
He should probably switch parties (though he said he’d never do that).
I’m glad that you raised the issue. This is a cut in FICA payments of 2%. FICA is where the money that pays for Social Security comes from.
A two month continuation hurts funding a bit. A one year continuation hurts funding a lot. We know that Dims want to dismantle OASI. Why are Pubs going alonmg with this even for two months?
Would someone smarter than I pleaseplease explain what’s going on?
The global business economy has already said that this would take months to implement. Did the Rats listen? Did the MSM listen?
I will say it till I stop breathing. This isn’t Obama’s fault. We all knew he would do this. It is the medias fault for caring more about a failed ideology than their jobs.
After a year, they will never be able to repeal this temporary tax holiday.
