Finland 'finds Patriot missiles' on China-bound ship
BBC News ^ | 12/21/11 | BBC

Posted on 12/21/2011 3:22:04 PM PST by NormsRevenge

The Finnish authorities have impounded an Isle of Man-flagged ship bound for China with undeclared missiles and explosives, officials say.

Police are questioning the crew of the MS Thor Liberty after what were described as 69 Patriot anti-missile missiles were found aboard.

Interior Minister Paivi Rasanen said the missiles were marked "fireworks".

The MS Thor Liberty had docked in the Finnish port of Kotka after leaving Germany last week.

Dock workers became suspicious after finding explosives poorly stored on open pallets, and the missiles were then found in containers marked "fireworks".

The managing director of the ship's owner, Thorco Shipping, expressed surprise. Thomas Mikkelsen told AFP news agency from Denmark that he was unaware of the matter.

Another company official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the ship had been detained in Finland and said the missiles could have been loaded on to the vessel by mistake, AFP adds.

Police did not confirm Finnish media reports that the ship had also been scheduled to stop in South Korea, Reuters news agency reports. 'Quite unusual'

The MS Thor Liberty left port in Emden, northern Germany, on 13 December and docked two days later in Kotka, southern Finland, to pick up a cargo of anchor chains, said Finnish Customs spokesman Petri Lounatmaa. It was bound for the Chinese port of Shanghai but there was no indication for whom the military cargo was destined.

In 1973 a friend of mine was a crew chief on a USAF C-130. This was years ago and I’m sorry but I don’t recall the name of the base but he said they dropped cargo at a US base in Turkey. My friend was told his plane would be back in two days and he was ordered to stay behind. He said that was not SOP. Long story short, the plain broke down at it’s destination on that two day trip and it was almost a month getting back to Turkey to retrieve him. He learned later that on the two day trip his plane delivered US made bombs to Moscow and he didn’t have the clearance classification to be involved.

Yeah, you don't just pick these things up at a yard sale. This has to have a helluva audit trail back to SOMEWHERE.

We need to stop selling weapons to friends, allies or enemies. Period. They get used against our soldiers far too often.

They KNOW.

True.

69 Patriot missiles.

What an FU to America.

No doubt they were simply marked ‘caution’ and covered in Saran Wrap. No. In doilies.

I’d say they were for a Christmas terrorist surprise in the US, but 0bama is still IN the contiguous US, so we’re safe for the moment.

Off topic. WTF does Greece need Patriot missiles for. Who'd want to attack them?

Anybody know if they have the command-and-control hardware and whether they are first generation or later? Without the support infrastructure, they are incredibly useless. If they are first generation, they are pretty useless.

If they were being shipped with the support infrastructure, that would be incredibly worrisome.

Apparently, the missiles were destined for South Korea, NOT China. Germany exports lots of military stuff to South Korea, BTW a key US ally in the region. At the moment of the incident, the Patriot missiles were on a Danish ship and were property of South Korea. According to the German government the export contract stated that after leaving the port at Emden transportation was South Korea's responsibility.

Source:http://www.spiegel.de/politik/ausland/0,1518,805425,00.html (for those not fluent in German, try Google for a translation)

My interpretation: South Korea probably wanted to discretely stock up on Patriots in light of the current security situation over there and someone f****d up the transportation.

Anyone remember this story?

“China’s action troubles admiral”

The Washington Times ^ | 11-28-07 | Bill Gertz

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1931824/posts

“China’s refusal to allow U.S. warships to visit Hong Kong recently was carried out to protest U.S. sales of Patriot missile equipment to Taiwan, Bush administration officials said yesterday.

Meanwhile, the senior commander in the Pacific called China’s action “troubling” and inconsistent with Beijing’s claim to being a “peaceful” power.

“This is perplexing,” said Adm. Timothy J. Keating via video from Honolulu. “It’s not helpful. It is not, in our view, conduct that is indicative of a country who understands its obligations of a responsible nation.”

The four-star admiral said he doubted that “we’ll receive an apology from the Chinese. I’m not expecting one.””

Latest info: Contract between Germany and South Korea dates back to 2007, sale of surplus equipment.

Main reason for the incident: Translation error in the papers (I guess somewhere between German, English, Finnish and Korean missiles turned into fireworks).
