George H.W. Bush calls Mitt Romney ‘the best choice’ in 2012 campaign

Mitt Romney has picked up a major, if still unofficial, endorsement in his bid for the Republican presidential nomination.

Former President George H.W. Bush told the Houston Chronicle he believes Romney is the best candidate in the race—though he stopped short of officially endorsing his 2012 bid.

"I think Romney is the best choice for us," Bush told the Houston Chronicle. "I like Perry, but he doesn't seem to be going anywhere; he's not surging forward."

The ex-president, who is personally close to Romney, praised the former governor's "stability, experience, principles."

"He's mature and reasonable—not a bomb thrower," Bush said, adding that he didn't mean to besmirch anybody in the field. "I've got to be a little careful, because I like Perry; he's our governor."

Yet Bush wasn't nearly as kind about Newt Gingrich, admitting that he knows the former House speaker well and isn't a fan. "I'm not his biggest advocate," he said.

Mitt will fit in quite nicely. As a Mainer I can say you'd be surprised just how much time Clinton spends 20 mins south of me in Kennebunkport. Perhaps it's because Hillary's always away now with her new job. Yup, Mitt will fit in just fine.

"And Barbara calls me her son. I told the Republicans there, I said don't worry, every family has one, you know, the black sheep. I told them, this just shows you the lengths the Bushes would go to get another president in the family. I wish I could get them to adopt Hillary." - Bill Clinton

Is that really because he likes Mitt best, or because he thinks Mitt’s the least likely to threaten 0 in 2012, leaving the field open for Jeb in ‘16?

Less likely than who? Perry? Bachman? Santorum? Gingrich? Cain?

It's pretty clear that Romney isn't the least likely to threaten Obama this time around.

And what chance does Jeb really have in 2016? Wouldn't he have to win a Senate seat or something to prove that he's not just yesterday's man?

Bush supporting Romney?

Is this like the ol Bush/Rove rope-a-dope?

Romney needs a Bush enforcement like he needs being broadsided by Cain's bimbo Buick.

So who does junior support?

Jed Bush?

Oh yeah!

I don’t call this a big endorsement, if anything it’s another reason not to vote for Romney.

As long as conservatives splinter their support among the other candidates, Romney will prevail.

The only way he won’t is if conservatives could or would unite behind one of the other candidates, but it’s appearing that’s not going to happen.

If Romney takes Iowa, maybe that will be a wake up call, but I doubt it. I’ve read too many comments to the effect of “it’s my candidate or the highway”.
