Choosing his words carefully, the former president said he knew Gingrich relatively well. “I’m not his biggest advocate,” he said.
“I had a conflict with him at one point,” Bush recalled, alluding to the crucial moment in 1990 when a recession drove him to renege on his “no new taxes” pledge. He needed a bipartisan group of party leaders, including then-House Whip Gingrich, to stand with him.
“He was there, right outside the Oval Office. I met with all the Republican leaders, all the Democratic leaders,” Bush recalled. “The plan was, we were all going to walk out into the Rose Garden and announce this deal. Newt was right there. Got ready to go out in the Rose Garden, and I said, ‘Where’s Gingrich?’ Went up to Capitol Hill. He was here a minute ago. Went up there and started lobbying against the thing.
“He told me one time later on, he said, ‘This is the most difficult thing I ever had to do.’ I said, ‘I didn’t like it much myself, Newt.’”
Who benefits more here, Romney or Gingrich? Anyone whose vote might turn on a GHWB endorsement is already in Mitt’s corner, I assume, whereas Newt gets a boost from still-undecided base voters being reminded that he walked away from tax hikes 20 years ago even though it meant disappointing a Republican president. Conservatives love that side of him. Might matter when they’re trying to choose a Not Romney from among Gingrich, Perry, and Bachmann.
Sounds like another reason to like Gingrich. Undermining a RINO President's attempt at a tax hike. If President Bush had listened to Newt, we possibly would not have had Slick Willard for eight years.

That was the worst, stupidest, most idiotic thing that Bush-1 ever did. Moronic. Suicidal. And he thinks that this will HURT Gingrich?
Maybe he’s secretly trying to help him. But no, he isn’t that smart.
Actually, it didn’t even take a day, but minutes. His ‘kinder, gentler’ Inaugural address did it right there, with Reagan standing on the podium. I remember being absolutely livid at the time.

Agreed. I refer to him as the anti-Reagan. I couldn't bring myself to vote for him in either '88 or '92.

Had he listened to Dan Quayle who said don't do the Mitchell / Sununu / Darmin Tax compromise which cost him the election, we wouldn't have had Willard, but President Quayle later on. Who probably would have whacked Osama Bin Laden in the desert with a barrage of Tomahawk Cruise Missiles, instead of diddling an intern and playing golf and 9/11 would have never happened...

I was stunned. Of course, since I never had forgiven him for that crack about the voodoo economics, this just cemented my opinion of him; it's just that one would have expected him to have learned something after eight years.
No idea. I never saw it before. I would assume not, but still rather amusing, even if it was assembled by some leftie.
Any wonder major President BJ. Gingrich forced your as@ like a puppet and thank God he did. Got so much that was right done.
The sad part is that the senile old RINO STILL doesn’t realize that the Tax Hike was stupid........if this is his reason for picking Romney over Gingrich it tells you everything you need to know.
