BUENOS AIRES–Argentina's senate passed a controversial bill Thursday that gives the government control over newsprint, boosting the power of President Cristina Kirchner's administration in its battle against the opposition media.

The legislation gives the state control over Papel Prensa SA, the country's leading producer of paper used to produce newspapers.

The Brits have retired the Harrier from service. The carrier Illustrious has been converted from STOL aircraft to helicopters. The Brits won’t have an airplane carrier until the two new “Queen Elizabeth” class “super” carriers are in service deploying the STOL version of the F-35 if they don’t go broke first.

They have 4 Eurofighter Typhoons presently stationed at RAF Mt. Pleasant, assorted helicopters, a tanker, and a C-130 Hercules.

I agree that the Brits are better trained than the Argentines. If things quickly got serious there is the distinct possibility that attrition would take a significant toll before reinforcements could arrive. It’s a LONG way from the UK to the Falklands.

It is questionable if the Brits could have prevailed in the first Falklands war without being expeditiously re-supplied with high-tech munitions by the USA during the time of Ronaldus Magnus and Lady Thatcher. There are no such leaders in either country at this time. Of course, the Argentines have no decent leadership either.

Is not The Ocean considered a carrier? And have the Harriers actually been transferred to USMC?

HMS Ocean is classified as an amphibious assault ship (landing platform, helicopter).

The purchase of the Harriers for the Marines was reportedly finalized yesterday.

No doubt USA will assist Britain “as needed.” As we did during the recent Libyan crisis by supplying Tomahawks to them. Then again, Obi may be playing golf when Britain makes the call...

Apparently, the current defense forces for the Falklands consists of four Typhoons, a destroyer and a 500-man detachment from the British Army. Plus, you can figure that there's probably one nuke submarine lurking in the area.

There are no carrier forces. Nor is there a long-range bomber force.

While it's more than was available to defend the islands in 1982, I wonder if it's enough to dissuade a politically arrogant and militarily stupid Argentina.

He doesn’t have to. The newspapers in this country are by a vast majority socialist and shill for him.

He has problems with an opposition media on the Internet, which he is taking care of with SOPA and Net Neutrality.

They haven’t gotten rid of all the carriers yet. They still have the ability to protect the island and they could still launch non-invasion attacks on their coastal military infrastructure hard enough to overcome Argentinian defenses.

Trying to pick a fight is a bad more on Argentina’s part.

“the country’s opposition media” That’s one thing we don’t have in this Country when the Democrats are in power. In fact, it’s quite an Activist Media these days.

I think the Brits would probably rely on USAF refueling them en route to Falklands, as they were rumored to have done during recent Libya bombing. However, distance involved much greater.Brits have an ability to inflict great pain and destruction upon Argentina via missiles, as they did in Libya. I just don't think Argentina could take repeated hits as Libya did.

However, the Argentine military/government seems to have a large supply of "loose screws." But one would hope the people themselves would prevent such attacks on the Falklands. Their leaders never even repatriated the dead soldiers from the last invasion. Even when Brits took great pains to ID their fallen and return them to Argentina. A disgraceful act on the part of the junta.

As you say, they are"...politically arrogant and militarily stupid." Perhaps they feel Britain bogged down in ME? Syria watch?

The converse is also true: the Argentines likely would have prevailed, had not somewhere around two out of three of the aerialbombs carried by their Pucara and ex-US Skyhawk strike-attack aircraft not been defective.

The Argentines learned a lot about their military shortcomings from the Malvinas excercise. Including that of aircraft ordnance storage and stowage.

Brits have nuclear subs.

Six Trafalgars, and one Astute class SSN submarine.

Some manned with full crews. Some not.

HMS Astute: world's most advanced nuclear submarine runs aground

Crewmates shot on UK nuke submarine

Nuclear submarine should be sent to Falklands to show British anger at boat ban decision

Nope. Unless Astute ran aground again....
