House approves payroll tax cut, jobless benefits

The House passed a two-month renewal of payroll tax cuts for 160 million workers and unemployment benefits for millions of jobless on Friday, giving President Barack Obama a resounding victory over Republicans who control the House.

The Senate approved the bill earlier.

The measure was passed by voice vote in a virtually empty House chamber despite lingering grumbling from Tea Party Republicans.

It buys time for negotiations early next year on how to cover the costs of a yearlong extension of the two percentage point payroll tax cut, the centerpiece of Obama's fall jobs agenda.

And....There it is. Right on time. The cave. And Boehner and the Republican House “leadership” didn’t even get any concessions for all the huffing and puffing. MORONS. At least they’re consistent....

OLD MITCH just LECTURED all of the freshmen - telling them to stop playing politics and to get on-board. He lectured them and lectured them - called them out as FRESHMEN - saying they don’t understand how Washington works.

When they come back in January, the House GOP needs to replace Boehner with someone like Ryan for Speaker. Likewise in the Senate, replace McConnell with Demint for Minority leader.

I don't at all like how this went down and it is Boehner’s and McConnell's fault. However, there will be other battles to fight and we need new LEADERSHIP in the House and Senate to fight going into the campaign season. Boehner and McConnell have shown, load and clear, that they are inept and incompetent in leadership roles.

This was bad but not as bad as that STUPID debt limit “deal” that lead to the “super committee” that did absolutely NOTHING. That was Boehner’s and McConnell's greatest example to date of incompetence.

Republicans = COWARDS

Obama Wins!! Tax payer loses 10 months of tax cuts!!
If the GOP wanted a 2 month extension ,Obama would have wanted a full year , the place is full of children

The GOP leadership must teach those uppity little freshmen their place. Don’t they get it? The Democrats are the Harlem Globetrotters and the Republicans are the Washington Generals. That’s the way the game is played, boys and girls. After all, who really wants to see Meadowlark Lemon take an elbow in the ear? There are no good guys or bad guys here. So forget your silly notions of right or wrong, people. You’re in the big time now. It’s show business, and that’s what the people are paying you for. Don’t make waves - just bring that money on home. </s>

If I understand it correctly (and one house member, speaking from his home town) any one rep. may ask a question and that would necessitate bring the who bunch back first of next week.

I didn’t realize that Obama ran with defunding SS as part of his platform. This tax is never going to be put back in place. The Obama Admin has set the precedent for calling reinstatement a tax increase. Oh well. The sooner SS goes complete broke the better as far as I’m concerned. I don’t plan to ever receive a dime from it anyway.

How is it a resounding victory for Obama? Obama wanted a one year extension also. The Republicans lost nothing here except they made themselves look bad by not just passing it. They need to learn which battles to fight. A 2 month extenstion with agreement they would work on making it a year in January when they return and they had almost 90% of the Senate passing it....that is not the right battle.

They might as well stay gone. One-half of our bicameral legislature has just been rendered impotent. The Senate passes bills, the President signs them, and the House goes AWOL. We are worse off now than we were when Pelosi was in charge.

What do you mean establishment republicans? Not one tea party republican stopped this either and they could have.

Correct, which should tell you what a colossal, boneheaded fight this was to pick in the first place.

There was never a chance of winning this the moment Senate Republicans voted for the deal that McConnell/Boehner struck with Reid.

The whole thing was stupid. Talk about not understanding how to pick your battles. I dunno if the problem was Boehner making a deal he didn't initially have the votes for, or House Republicans getting pressure from home and backing away from the 2month+keystone deal that had obviously been agreed to by leadership, but the House GOP managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Actually it was a win - or at least a PR win, just a few days ago. We made Hussein agree to the Keystone language and there are no millionaire tax increase offsets. It was obviously the deal Boehner/McConnell had reached with Reid. Getting that Keystone language in was a victory for us and had been clearly portrayed as such in the media. I dunno what happened, but it appears some House Republicans decided to fight a battle they had no chance to win. Now they've caved which was obviously going to happen given the politics of the situation, made themselves look like idiots, and generally appear incompetent.
