(AP)WASHINGTON Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has failed to qualify for Virginia's March 6 Republican primary, a development that complicates his bid to win the GOP presidential nomination.
"After verification, RPV has determined that Newt Gingrich did not submit required 10K signatures and has not qualified for the VA primary," the Republican Party of Virginia announced early Saturday on its Twitter website.
Perry also fell short of the 10,000 signatures of registered voters required for a candidate's name to be on the primary ballot, but former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Texas Rep. Ron Paul will be on the ballot.
State GOP spokesman Garren Shipley said volunteers spent Friday validating petitions that the four candidates submitted by the Thursday 5 p.m. deadline to the State Board of Elections. Shipley was not available early Saturday to discuss the announcement posted on the website.
Failing to get on the ballot will be a major setback for Gingrich, who has tried to use his recent upsurge in popularity to make up for a late organizing start. Ironically, Gingrich had a slight lead over Romney, with others farther back, in a Quinnipiac poll of Virginia Republicans released earlier in the week.

Smartest guy in the room. lol
The dog ate my homework. It’s not my fault, they’re all against me. It’s a conspiracy!! Pass the popcorn.
isn’t this how obama got elected? getting others thrown off the ballot?
RNC insiders rigging the system to get their butt boy Romney the nomination.
Wasn’t it the commies who said something like ... it doesn’t matter who votes... only who counts the votes?
Well, the insiders are counting the votes.
It is all insane.
I guess it will be easy for you to vote Romney or Paul then LOL
It’s 2008 deja vu all over again.
For your consideration...may not be stupidity on the part of the candidates, but too many hoops to jump over...
I really don’t understand any of it.All of the rumors about Jeb,Palin,Trump getting in are insane as well. How can they qualify when those that did it correctly and officially ran and didn’t play games are not even qualifying?
Go for it. Maybe it should have been changed in 2008 or before?
So....bottom line the GOP fixed it to force Obameycare Mitt??
This is a fight over 49 GOP delegates or 4% of the 1144 needed to win the nomination. In 2008 McCain won with 1455 delegates as opposed to his nearest competitor Huckabee with 270 delegates. So in the overall scheme of things these 49 delegates probably won’t make any difference in the overall outcome. What does matter is the primary voters in VA are being limited as to their choices, but that’s the process established by their governing bodies.
this is where money that buys organization helps.. I really don’t get Perry not making it though I thought he was oozing money
I HAD THE BEST LAUGH SO FAR THIS MORNING ........
Hey, Newt, if you had insisted on the “Wisconsin Method of Verification” and claimed that the Virginia Method was discriminatory, all those “Mickey Mouse” and “Adolph Hitler” signatures ... well in your case, Charles Borromeo, John Bosco, Theresa Lisieux and Catherine Sienna signatures would have passed through without any questions.
BTW those are Saints in the Catholic Church for those of you who wonder where I got those names.
Face it, we have no choice in this election. Romney will be our candidate which, in turn, leads to an Obama win.
Why anyone thinks we actually have a say in this I don't understand.
Title is misleading. Should read “Perry, Gingrich, Huntsman, Bachmann, and Santorum Fail to Make Ballot.”
Guess you’ll be voting for one of the two smart guys then. Whom will you choose, Mitt or Wrong?
Don’t kid yourself...the GOP establishment is going to do whatever is necessary to get the nomination to Romney. Like Obama, once in the WH he will follow orders. No investigation of Fanny/Freddie or Wall Street.
They are apolitical organization and are free to change their rules at amy time. Pressure could be effective, especially if applied towards Gov McDonnell and his future politcal aspirations.
