Gingrich, Perry fail to make Va. ballot

(AP)WASHINGTON — Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has failed to qualify for Virginia's March 6 Republican primary, a development that complicates his bid to win the GOP presidential nomination.

"After verification, RPV has determined that Newt Gingrich did not submit required 10K signatures and has not qualified for the VA primary," the Republican Party of Virginia announced early Saturday on its Twitter website.

Perry also fell short of the 10,000 signatures of registered voters required for a candidate's name to be on the primary ballot, but former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Texas Rep. Ron Paul will be on the ballot.

State GOP spokesman Garren Shipley said volunteers spent Friday validating petitions that the four candidates submitted by the Thursday 5 p.m. deadline to the State Board of Elections. Shipley was not available early Saturday to discuss the announcement posted on the website.

Failing to get on the ballot will be a major setback for Gingrich, who has tried to use his recent upsurge in popularity to make up for a late organizing start. Ironically, Gingrich had a slight lead over Romney, with others farther back, in a Quinnipiac poll of Virginia Republicans released earlier in the week.

I owe you an apology. I ASSumed you were referring to Mike HUCKabee. Even though you pull for the Titans, you do deserve the apology for my mistake. Merry Christmas.

the party is, for apparently the first time, cross-checking the addresses that signature-givers gave against the electronic voter database file for accuracies. A name without a proper address match was tossed, the official said.

Aha. Now we are learning something. This check was done by computer, and for the first time. And all candidates who applied for certifiaction were rejected.

Could be due to an overly-strict address match algorithm. For example if your actual street address is "1234 N Main St" but you wrote down "1234 Main" you got rejected.

New computerized process. Done for the first time. Rejects ALL candidates who used it. It's a process problem/glitch.

There's the problem right there.

I’ve been posting for more than a year that I believe that Mitt Romney has bought and paid for the nomination either monetarily, or with promise options. Whatever is/was good for Mitt is what he paid to whomever for this bid.

It’s looking to me as though I was correct in my assessment all along. Most unfortunate.

Yeah, I considered Ron Paul. Hell, I considered Newt way back when all you so-called conservatives assured me I was nuts for considering a liberal sell-out like Gingrich.

But I have never voted for Paul. I've never "supported" him. And just as I couldn't talk myself into voting for Newt, or Perry, I can't talk myself into voting for Ron Paul.

All I have left at this point is to write-in Bugs Bunny. The GOP field is an absolute disgrace.

It’s my understanding that if no candidate has enough votes on the first round at the convention, the delegates from all the states etc at the convention no longer have to vote the way their electors did in the primaries and caucuses. They will have been released from their commitment. So if no single candidate comes to the convention with a majority of delegates, after the initial vote it can open up to a free vote or succession of votes to hash out who the nominee will be. At that point, I believe anyone who was on any state primary ballot and got enough votes for at least one delegate is in the running, along with all others who have at least one delegate, but I’m not sure if this is a requirement. Maybe someone totally new could be introduced. It depends on the rules the GOP decides for the convention.

Hmmm. Not sure about that link or other stories either.

First we heard that Newt lost 2000 signatures due to lack of address. Now we hear that there were addresses, they just didn't match the database. Three points:

Did Perry and Newt have anyone observing the verification process. If so, wonder what they have to say?

Second, Was there really enough time to compare all these addresses, or could human error have occurred during the process?

Third, which address is actually correct? The database or the one on the forms? Can GOP just assume their database is correct and disqualify automatically, or do they have to make some effort to determine the truth?

In St. Louis, if memory serves, the court ruled that you can not just toss the ballots due to address discrepancies or something, so I'm thinking this may not be over.

However, Perry and Newt will both benefit from getting this matter dealt with quickly and off the front page Headlines.

There were only two who applied...Perry and Gingrich.

Bachmann, Santorum and Huntsman did not apply because they didn’t have the goods and knew it.

But yes, nobody made it who didn’t make it last time (Obama, Romney, Paul), too.

I have to hand it to the GOP establishment. If people think their offered candidate sucks, they just disqualify all of them but two. Whatta country. geesh

Milt or Ron.

Hope Paul beats him.

Could someone either point me to information or give me an answer to the following questions:

1. Does Ron Paul blame the US for 9/11?

2. Does Ron Paul believe 9/11 was an inside job?

thanks.

If either one of them thinks he can run the Federal government, why can't they run a campaign?

These candidates need to be more savvy to the tactics employed by their oppositions.

An organized war against petitions is in full swing. You must spend the extra money to verify each signature as you go or, if you've proposed meaningful reform, you'll find yourself shockingly short by a statistically unlikely number.

Of course if you're on the left and trying to recall a Republican governor, any name qualifies. /s

If so was it set cause Romney met it?

Yep confusing to say the least. But the 10,000 was the minimun set sometime back if my memory of what I’ve read is correct. At 600 per district and 15,000 statewide I guess they figure the unqualified discarded signatures will still leave enough to meet the base 400 per district and 10,000 statewide. Who knows and I’m not that worried about VA as a deciding factor in the primary. I don’t think 49 delegates out of 1144 needed to win will be a factor at all.

> I’ll tell you what’s pissing me off. Why is the News Media, FReepers and the blogs all saying “Newt and Perry” didn’t make the ballot? The fact is, Bachmann, Santorum, Huntsman, Gingrich, and Perry ALL didn’t make the ballot.

Yes, but what’s noteworthy is that Gingrich and Perry had the numbers and the organization to get the signatures, and (apparently) incompetence in the campaign screwed up.

That’s why it’s a story. The MSM sucks, it’s true, but MSM suckage doesn’t make the mistakes of the Newt or Perry camps more palatable.

If you expect to go against the Zer0 Machine you sure as shootin better have your act together. Am I wrong?
