Skip to comments. How do you like those ballot restrictions now? [TEA Partyers unite against this RINO fascism!!]

"A Gingrich campaign official prior to the move by the Republican Party of Virginia said the problem is how the rules are set up, arguing that the party is, for apparently the first time, cross-checking the addresses that signature-givers gave against the electronic voter database file for accuracies. A name without a proper address match was tossed, the official said."

Too bad they aren’t checking eligibility of the candidates re being natural born citizens...
So, that’s the reason for the “lack of address” elimination.
Addresses did not match their database! Voters move in between elections!
Merry Christmas, Jim and all. Re-post my prior comment from another thread:
If just addressses, the omitted candidates could be succesful with a Court challenge. Courts generally rule that the law doesnt elevate form over substance. Beyond that, they usually rule in favor of voter participation. If the petition omissions are purely technical (e.g. no addresses) the omitted candidates should go to Court as a class- and request relief that they be allowed to amend the petitions to include the addresses. (Dont think one can add names at this point).
All omitted candidates must join- cant be just one. That will leave Romney and the State GOP to argue against inclusion not a great argument when likely 70% of the GOP voters favor other candidates.
Something stinks bad.
This has the stench of Rove all over it.
Vin, your thoughts on the previous thread will most likely come into play.
Voter “intent” (new accuate addresses) versus “database” = this will be challenged.
Romney will be forced to defend the exclusion of his number one rival, Gingrich, and also Perry.
They first became suspicious when the names actually matched a known adress.
This is very unusual, said a unnamed source, usually the adress do not match. Often the residents are deceased or have names like Mickey Mouse or Adolf Hitler.
To bad Newt is not a minority who could claim his civil right are being violated.
I just pinged you, hoping you would repost here on this thread!!!
AND there is plenty of time to get this done!
I hope the Newt and Perry go for it!
So you smell a rat too?
This is an utterly absurd basis for disqualification because it implies the electronic data base is accurate and that those who gathered the signatures were being fraudulent. Neither assumptions are either valid or provable. One way to disprove this is to verify that the addresses of those on the petition sheets are actually true and the data base is incorrect.
Newt is actually leading in Virginia by a significant margin too.
This has Romney’s mormon minions and/or RNC insider fingerprints all over it.
I hope Gingrich and Perry take this to court.
Indeed!!! Its one thing to double check a Lyndon LaRouche type, another to check a former Speaker and a Governor of Texas.
Seems 20% moved between elections, and this is grounds for denying the candidate (s) a position on the ballot??
neat trick, if they can pull it off.
I would have lawyers all over this so quick they would be amazed.
“Voters move in between elections!”
When you move, RE REGISTER!!
A Republican RAT. Why would the Virginia Republican party be so gung-ho on disqualifying its LEADING Republican candidate? And or the governor of the state of Texas? Something stinks to high heaven!!
I am just devastated. Heard on Fox News that VA rules do not allow a write in during primaries and that going to court won’t matter either? the chosen one “Romney” is being crammed down our throats...just like when our mothers made us take a dose of bad medicine. I wont vote if it is Romney or Paul. RIGGED election
We have to be careful here, lest we set a precedent that could undermine our efforts on Voter ID.
This entire VA process reeks.
How could a guy who served as Lt Gov and then 3 consecutive terms as Governor and who championed Voter ID suddenly be in the cross hairs with accusations that over 50% of his collected signatures are bogus?
I don’t believe it for a minute.
I think this entire charade is being used to discredit our entire party.
5 out of 7 of our candidates are so weak or crooked that they can’t get on the ballot?
Romney doesn't have to defend this. All he has to say is that the people of Virginia can choose their candidates on any basis they wish.
Of cou8rse we know this is not true as once a state chooses to have an election, they are regulated by a large body of state and federal law.
No, RPV will be defending any court challenge.
There is some interesting commentary at Sabato’s twitter page about the origins of all this and how it puts Virginia in a class by itself. Have lived here a long time and had no idea how restrictive the rules are.
Sabato says that most of the restrictive rules were put in place by rats to stifle competition.
Selective enforcement of the law is the rule of men, not of law.
I’ve worked as a canvasser previously. Let’s see.
6 weeks of canvassing netted me 400 signitures.
You’re telling me that Newt couldn’t round up 20k sigs in VA? Me and about 10 others depending on how we were spread out over the state could do it in a month.
Newt dropped the ball here, which is a pity.
onyx, the news couldnt be any worse. I am so sick. Iowa seems to have been so drawn out and I wasn’t expecting Newt to win in NH but believed he would have a good showing and take VA...how could this happen? Paul is a expert at running for president..what is this? the 3rd time? and Romney ran in the 2008 election so they are familiar with the political machine. The MONEY they both have is mind boggling. Would love to see the list of their contributors. LOOKS like I wont be able to vote for president in this elecion. I am sick, sick, sick.
No dooubt Mark Levin and Rush will be all over this.
I bet this has more to do with the 400 signatures from each district rule than, the signatures not being from valid registered voters.
I have not seen a satisfactory explanation of why all these names have been thrown out.
I find it impossible to believe that longtime politicians like Newt and Perry just submitted a bunch of bogus names thinking they could wing it.
It does not pass the smell test.
Now you know how we felt when Cain’s family was getting death threats.
It’s a real pity you didn’t stand behind Cain. I warned you that this would happen, and I’ve been proven right.
The GOP isn’t going to scuttle Newt until it’s too late for anyone but Romney to win, which they are now doing since they managed to destroy everyone but Newt and Romney.
Gator!!!!!! I think you nailed it! Rove has been harping on Gingrich’s lack of organization for weeks. Would not doubt if he was celebrating Newt being eliminated from the VA primary and Newt would have won in VA.
Just illustrates the fact that it's not Conservatives vs. Democrats, it's Conservatives vs. Socialists, Marxists, and Progressives.
Something the Tea Party has known for a while.
Now, most on this forum would support a law requiring that before casting a vote a voter must produce a driver’s license or some other document to prove that the voter is who he says he is. Why do you and others now have a problem with requiring the same in the primary process. Can you have it both ways without looking hypocritical? Mitt would be only slightly better than Obama for the next four years, but doesn’t logical consistency count for something?
Cain made some gaffes during his campaign and I really didnt like his 999 plan..that being said..Newt stuck up for Cain..do you see Cain doing that now for Newt? NO!!!! my man has been Newt and still is....I am hoping for a miracle.
In a perfect world.
Whenever I have moved, re-registering was not high on my list, until election time.
MERRY CHRISTMAS Dale!!!
AND there is plenty of time to get this done!
Frankly, that’s the legal argument. “Your Honor, Joe Jones placed his name on a petition in support of (e.g.) Mr. Perry- and is now being denied his vote because he failed to include his address. The primary is 4 months away. We ask the Court to allow Mr. Jones one week to provide the requisite address. How is the Virginia GOP harmed by such relief, as against the exclusion of Mr. Jones’ expressed will to vote for Mr. Perry?”
I thought I read that many of Newt signatures were completely missing adresses. That said, I think an equal protection lawsuit could at least force the verification of Paul and Romney petitions.
“The Republican party cross-checking addresses against database for the FIRST TIME? Smells pretty fishy to me.”
It stinks to high heaven. The VA gop is about as establishment as it gets. And they’ll likely get away with it. VA courts are not particularly sympathetic to these kinds of challenges.
This is one of those times that having run as a third party candidate probably helped Ron Paul; he knows that you have to dot the i’s and cross the t’s on the paperwork. States are always trying to exclude third parties from the ballot based on this kind of petty BS.
McDonnell has to be behind this. He wants to either vote present in this endorsement cycle or endorse Romney. Having Perry and Gingrich off the ballot gives him cover either way (endorsing Romney over Paul wont hurt Micky D with state conservatives). If it looks like a non Romney will get the nomination on the run up to Super Tuesday, Micky D will simply vote present. Bob McDonnell is fully entrenched in the establishment and is a danger. As a Virginian, I keep trying to warn everyone.
Yeah, onyx. I was just assuming it was bad ground game, but this is really, really fishy.
They’ve NEVER cross-checked signatures before, and suddenly all of these Mitt-backers in charge of the process in VA are requiring every signature be cross-checked with a database for correct addresses? Not even just to see if they are, in fact, registered voters, but they have to have correct addresses?
What constitutes an incorrect address? What if they just left off the zip code? How does having a different address prove you’re not a registered voter?
This was a very well-organized act by Team Romney to disqualify everyone. As I have said before: Virginia is winner-take-all. EVERYONE in VA should vote for Ron Paul now to deny Mitt Romney ANY delegates. These guys should NOT be rewarded for this absolute crock of steaming crap.
They should have more time to re-register. Why was the sig. deadline so early, the VA primary is more than 2 months away.
This is orchestrated by the GOP elite who want Obamney as the candidate, it is fishy, indeed. The only thing they will accomplish is getting Obama re-elected.
Aha. Now we are learning something. The address check was done by computer. For the first time. The result: *ALL* candidates who applied for certification were rejected (Romney and Ron Paul were grandfathered in from 2008).
It’s a process problem. Could be due to an overly-strict address match algorithm. For example if your actual street address is “1234 N Main St” but you wrote down “1234 Main” you got rejected.
Hang in there Katie. It’s bad, real bad, but it’s not over.
Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead.
GO NEWT GO.....
I have not had the opportunity to look into the reports of Newts disqualification.
I did however, watch the perry disqualification as it was parsed out to us last night by the media in dribs and drabs with all kinds of innuendo and no facts.
However, when five candidates that otherwise appear to be in the final running are disqulified, simply because 20% of the addresses do not agree, someone is screwing with the process.
When i ran for office years ago, i did not go out to get as many signatures as i could, I simply got enough, and a few more for insurance. NO doubt here the candidates that did get over 10,000, assumed they had enough valid ones, and they would have, if the rules were not changed to allow deletions based on address of registrant.
If Team Snake Romney objects, he will have to handle the public relations for his objection and disenfranchised VA voters are going to be really maaad at him.
“Romney will be forced to defend the exclusion of his number one rival, Gingrich, and also Perry.”
Oh, he’ll issue some sort of soft criticism of the process for public consumption. But you can bet that his lawyers will fight like bad newz kennel pitbulls to keep Newt and Rick Perry off the ballot.
That wasn’t directed at Newt, that was directed at you.
We needed the conservatives here to rally around each other rather then tearing down a good man.
Now, the crocodile is eating Newt, and don’t say we didn’t warn you, because we said so.
Now, we need to get Cain back in so that we can get credible opposition to Romney. If you can’t get on the ballot in your home state, you are finished.
Newt’s done. Let’s get Cain back in.
