In His Debut In Washington’s Power Struggles, Gingrich Threw A Bomb

Bob Woodward December 24

On the evening of Oct. 4, 1990, Newt Gingrich and his then-wife, Marianne, were enjoying a VIP reception at a Republican fundraiser when they were suddenly hustled over to have their picture taken with President George H.W. Bush.

“I thought it was a bad idea,” Gingrich said in a series of interviews in 1992 that have not been previously published.

Days earlier, Gingrich had dramatically walked out of the White House and was leading a very public rebellion against a deficit reduction and tax increase deal that Bush and top congressional leaders of both parties — including, they thought, Gingrich — had signed off on after months of tedious negotiations. The House was to vote on the deal the very next day.

“We went over and I said [to Bush], ‘I’m really sorry that this is happening,’ and he said with as much pain as I’ve heard from a politician, ‘You’re killing us, you are just killing us.’

...he said with as much pain as I’ve heard from a politician, ‘You’re killing us, you are just killing us.'

Funny, that's what the Republican Establishment is saying to the Tea Party now...

Great article. Bush thought that conservatives were the enemy and the Left was his friend.

Mr President (HW BUSH) how can anyone be killing you if you have already committed suicide?

Last week, Woodward and his then-dog, Bernstein, were in bed together trying to cook up a plot to hurt the leading Republican’s chances.

Being a purist is all well and good but remember what the ultimate result was:

Bill Clinton in power for 8 years ....Yee Ha

Perhaps when Bush said, "read my lips", Newt took him at his word.

And when old Bush lied to America, that's what cost us the White House --as Newt had warned would happen if taxes were raised.

I dont doubt it happened that way and I have no idea why Bush thought he had to raise taxes but it sounds like he thought Newt was on board the deal. As with all politics Newt gained from his actions and Bush lost ......and the country lost as well.

I cant prove it but I think Clinton and Monica brought us 9-11.

All l Im saying is politics is a two edged sword

Since all revenue bills must orginate in the House of Representatives... Exactly how does a President raise taxes?

The gun ban caused the change in leadership. As was appropriate. Act badly, get smacked around for it.

Funny that the media didn't talk about that much.

Federal Democrats won't touch a gun bill with a 10' pole, these days. They know.

Way back then, the president was engaged and would work with the legislative branch, negotiate, propose, etc. etc.

I know, it’s hard to imagine now that we’ve seen the wisdom of detachment by the grand dozer, but it’s true.

:)

And all revenue bills have to originate in the House of Representatives.

Presidents don't raise taxes.

Still. Ever.

By signing the bill that raises taxes..if he veto’s it then 2/3 of both houses are needed to pass the bill..Or he can do a pocket veto....he neither signs to nor veto’s it...it then becomes law after (I think ) 10 days..

Nope, but they can participate and have more or less influence in the legislation - for good or ill.

Bill have to be signed (or over-ridden) to become law, so what the prez says he will or won’t sign can be part of the process.

O is the least influential prez in my memory.

“Being a purist is all well and good but remember what the ultimate result was: Bill Clinton in power for 8 years ....Yee Ha”

You don’t think the problem had anything to do with Bush agreeing to raise taxes after promising not to? I guess any R who doesn’t do what their president wants is a purist? Worked well during the W years.

Looks like the Rove party is battling for supremacy. They sleep with the rats and want to continue the “you have 8 and be the bad guys and we will have 8 and be the bad guys” program. I believe they are responsible for this cretan and his posse we have now

Yes they do, and in this case also the House passed the bill which raised taxes.
