(AP) LAGOS, Nigeria - An explosion ripped through a Catholic church during Christmas Mass near Nigeria's capital Sunday, killing at least 25 people there, officials said. A radical Muslim sect claimed the attack and another bombing near a church in the restive city of Jos, as explosions also struck the nation's northeast.
The Christmas Day attacks show the growing national ambition of the sect known as Boko Haram, which is responsible for at least 495 killings this year alone, according to an Associated Press count. The assaults come a year after a series of Christmas Eve bombings in Jos claimed by the militants left at least 32 dead and 74 wounded. Their militant and fundamentalist views on Islam have earned them the nickname "Nigerian Taliban."
The first explosion on Sunday struck St. Theresa Catholic Church in Madalla, a town in Niger state close to the capital, Abuja, authorities said. Rescue workers recovered at least 25 bodies from the church and officials continued to tally those wounded in various hospitals, said Slaku Luguard, a coordinator with Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency.
His agency already has acknowledged it didn't have enough ambulances immediately on hand to help the wounded. Luguard also said an angry crowd that gathered at the blast site hampered rescue efforts as they refused to allow workers inside.
"We're trying to calm the situation," Luguard said. "There are some angry people around trying to cause problems."

Did CBS actually say it was a ‘radical Muslim group?’ Some editor fell down on the job.
Once again we see why islame is the scourge of humanity.
Sounds like a 60's rock band.
The Taliban attacked? I guess they didn’t get the memo from the Vice-Dunce that the Taliban aren’t our enemies per se.
“Did CBS actually say it was a radical Muslim group? Some editor fell down on the job.”
Probably the Christmas replacement did not get the message. Per se
There is no greater evil than Islam and the West has inoculated itself with it.
A whiter shade of they should all be impaled ?
We pray for conversion and salvation of all Muslim of every persuasion and everywhere.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, amen.
Islamo-Facists use any excuse to murder Innocent Christians and Jews...
Hey Ron Paul! How is this America’s Fault??
Voltaire to Islam: I disagree with your bombing a church, and may well have to fight to the death to prevent you from bombing anyone else, incluuding me.
It is necessary to say “radical islam” and refer to it as the ‘religion of peace’. Not because it’s true, but just so that it’s possible to take out the “most virulent branch” du jour of Islam without getting all 1.2 billion Moose Limbs riled up. Incrementally, you can defeat them all.
But my minister keeps telling us that we don’t understand them.
Thermonuclearly you could, too. And a damn-site faster.
Nigeria's Christians and its oil fields are concentrated in the south.
Perhaps it's time for the Christian South to secede, form their own country, and expel their Muslims to the north. Before the northern Muslims start a bloodbath.
BreakingNews Breaking News More: White House offers 'sincere condolences to the Nigerian people' following attacks; pledges to assist Nigerian officials - @NBCNewsSo, no condemnation? Just condolences to the whole country, including those who condone the act? Maybe I'm nitpicking, but it sounds about as weak as a statement could be.
It's what you say after a flood or other natural disaster.
And liberals get furious when some of us call him a crypto-Muslim.
