HONOLULU — The Obama administration has been enmeshed in a vigorous internal debate over whether to allow the embattled president of Yemen, Ali Abdullah Saleh, to travel to New York City for medical treatment, with at least one administration official saying Monday that the decision to admit him had been made.

The administration, hunting for a way to ensure progress toward elections in Yemen, has been grappling with fears that the United States would be criticized for appearing to provide a safe haven for a reviled Arab leader responsible for the deaths of hundreds of demonstrators. If he is allowed entry, Mr. Saleh would be the first Arab leader to be granted admission to the United States since political unrest began convulsing the region a year ago.

Although the official said a visa had not been formally issued to Mr. Saleh, there was no further “impediment” to doing so. Though the administration had been concerned that the decision would anger the many Yemenis eager to see Mr. Saleh prosecuted for the bloody clashes between security forces and protesters, some believe that giving Mr. Saleh a way out of Yemen, even temporarily, could help smooth the way to elections next year and perhaps end a political crisis that has brought the government of the impoverished nation to the brink of collapse.

“In the end, we felt there was enough good to be gained that it was worth managing the criticism that we’d get, including any comparisons to past episodes,” said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because...

If I were this guy, I would be very careful leaving my country while Obama is President. "Those who do not learn the lessons of History..."

Nope. Just looked it up (Duh!). He was in a lot of places, including NY and Texas, and died in Cairo, but I see no reference to Hawaii.

Brain cramp! Ow!

I’m having a flashback.

Is there a mob of Yemeni “students” sacking our San’a embassy and taking our diplomats hostage for 444 days in our near future?
