Skip to comments.Gingrich ’06 Memo: “Agree Entirely With Gov. Romney” on Health Care
Posted on 12/27/2011 7:11:11 AM PST by Outlaw Woman
To conservatives, the biggest strike against Mitt Romney is the health care plan he put in place in Massachusetts, but Newt Gingrich lavished praise on Romneys plan after it was passed in 2006.
We agree entirely with Governor Romney and Massachusetts legislators that our goal should be 100 percent insurance coverage for all Americans, Gingrich wrote in 2006.
And, Gingrich wrote, the key to achieving that goal was doing what Romney did in Massachusetts: Requiring everybody...
(Excerpt) Read more at abcnews.go.com ...
While in theory the plan should be affordable if the whole state contributes to the cost, the reality is that Massachusetts has an exhaustive list of health coverage regulations prohibiting insurers from offering more basic, pared-down policies with higher deductibles. (This is yet another reminder that America must establish a cross-state insurance market that gives individuals the freedom to shop for insurance plans in states other than their own.)
In our estimation, Massachusetts residents earning little more than $30,000 a year are in jeopardy of being priced out of the system. In the event that this occurs, Governor Romney will be in grave danger of repeating the mistakes of his predecessor, Mike Dukakis, whose 1988 health plan was hailed as a save-all but eventually collapsed when poorly-devised payment structures created a malaise of unfulfilled promises. We propose that a more realistic approach might be to limit the mandate to those individuals earning upwards of $54,000 per year.
Gingrich is McCain with an encyclopedia I figured that out weeks ago.
Attacking Newt because he agreed with Romney while pushing for Romney.
It’s a crazy world.
Yesterday was bash Ron Paul day.
Today seems to be bash Newt Gingrich day.
Newt agreed entirely with Romney's Massachusetts health care plan, he sat on a love seat with Nancy Pelosi to make TV ads promoting Al Gore's fraudulent global warming program. He made millions working with Freddie and Fannie when they were promoting subprime mortgages to increase home ownership among minorities. He attacked Paul Ryan for “right wing social engineering” and he worked with Al Sharpton to promote leftist education policies and giving taxpayer money to black racists.
Can someone explain to me why they think Newt Gingrich is a honest, principled conservative?
Newt is the anti-Christ. Don’t you get it yet?
The media bashes everyone but Romney. I wonder what they’re up to? /s
I’m not going to say he’s an “honest, principled, conservative”,
but I will state that this attack consists of the logic fallacy of conflating support for a statewide (ie, constitutional) system with support for a federal, unconstitutional system.
Gingrich supports amnesty, manmade global warming, the individual mandate, etc. I am sure the really good stuff is being held until/if he gets the nomination. Gingrich is a loose cannon who has been on both sides of every issue.
Well then, if you are so damned smart, then why are you too frigging dense to unerstand that you are paving the road, free and clear, for Romney and Obama?
Oh. I forgot “geniuses” like yoursef, aren’t bothered by thinking ahead.
Romney's tried the above statewide excuse, but it hasn't held water with most conservatives. Sounds like Newt is on the same page. Why is he given a pass?
As usual, a 5 year old article attacking Newt for agreeing with Romney. Except, as usual, Romney has taken all sides of every argument and therefore it is impossible to agree or disagree with a position as slimey as Romney’s.
It’s time to ask what will this candidate do for us as President.
The only one in the room with no track record before his election is the current present voting, present and malleable POTUS/Totus, but then again, his record and rhetoric have so little in common that you really can’t hold him to anything but Holder and Holder’s people.
This crap is getting old. Show me a candidate who will try to attack Obama personally and I will have an interest.
You are nothing more than a dog chasing it’s tail, thinking that something new and exciting is happening every time.
I guess ABC News really is trying to help pick the candidate that would be in the best interest of conservatives. /s
Anything from the MSM has to be taken with a truckload of salt.
Because as a congressman and as speaker Newt’s record was pretty damn conservative.
I can't because I don't.
Why not attack Romney? (The right thing to do) Who has done far more to ruin Conservatism than Newt ever thought of doing by actual deeds as Governor.
Oh I forgot. It matters more to take down the best chance we have of winning this election, and increasing our numbers in the House and Senate.
You may as well just support Romney outright and stop this stealth/covert effort to take down all of his opposition.
LOL. You frothing at the mouth Newtbots have allowed your obsessive hatred of Romney to embrace a thrice married, RINO like Gingrich who has supported amnesty, manmade global warming, expansion of Medicare, and individual mandates and is the only sitting Speaker ever to receive an overwhelmingly bipartisan reprimand from Congress. There are real conservatives in the race like Santorum and Bachmann. The choice isn’t just between Romney and Gingrich.
I agree with your point. Newt Gingrich's support for the Massachusetts health care plan is not at all comparable to supporting Obamacare or working to get Obamacare passed.
In fact, if this was the only time Newt had gone against conservative principles I would so it is ok, no candidate is perfect.
My point is that this is part of a pattern by Newt to support any policy that he thinks is expedient to promote his own career. The many examples I gave support this point. But now, when trying to get conservative votes, Newt pretends to be a conservative. I think Newt is an opportunist who will say anything to get elected but does not believe in the things he says.
If the Media would ‘vet’ the Liberals, Democrats, Libertarians [who I have found are far more Liberal than ‘tarian’], Community Organizers, Union Leaders, etc., as they do any Republican Candidate they remotely fear, ... we’d be living in a much better state of affairs ... all ‘57’ States of affairs.
Didn’t Romney, or some of his aids, have a big hand in 0bamacare?
Hypothetically you could use this moment in time not to criticize Speaker Gingrich, but rather share with readers who you support, and why.
Hypothetically of course.
LOL indeed! Keep sticking your foot in your mouth, while us “Newtbots” watch...........
Perhaps you should consider his record while serving in congress.
You're right....healthcare was perfect in 2006 so no reason to even think about it.
The politically expedient thing is to do no thinking and leave no paper trail...like Obama.
The “My single-digit perfect conservative candidate” posters dont care at this point about anything other than trying to pull off some magical win by the person they have been backing.
They think the people backing Newt are some unprincipled idiots that should have been behind a bunch of bumblers that have shown no ability to actually go after either.
Mitt Romney or Obama
All the while the backers of bumblers club have been going after each other because they think their holy candidate is the “true” conservative!
Again while not spending one ounce of their perfect conservatism going after Romney. Go figure!
Then they have the nerve to drone on about “the fix is in”.
Fixed by whom? Romney cant break 22%.
And you are a drooling Newtbot. Doesn’t matter though, your guy ain’t going anywhere.
ive gotta remember that one...heheheh...
LOL. The idea that if you don’t support Newt, you must be supporting Romney is pure crap. This isn’t a two person race—at least not yet. Newt is a very flawed candidate and not a conservative. If he were to get the nomination, there would be plenty of buyer’s remorse on this site once the Dem’s train their guns on him. The subject of this thread is just the latest revealation of many to come.
STOP IT! You’re confusing them with facts again!
They are too busy cutting their noses off to spite their faces, so let them cut without a second thought.
Please allow me to use a grading system to give my opinions of the candidates.
Yet here many are, completely immersed in the media narrative, which is a fantasy.
How long will it be before they finally 'get it'.
So post some pro-Santorum stuff.
I’d totally support Santorum. Absolutely.
So how about flooding FR with pro-Santorum articles? If you could arrange some sort of ad deal with Google interactive, you could make gobs of money just from me reading every single one. :D
until people deal with their fear of the boogeyman and realize that we've been played for 20 plus yrs, we dont have much hope for resisting the onslaught of fedzilla...
yeah, yeah, yeah...next comes the "perfect is the enemy" line...before you waste the bandwith, I'll go ahead and say 'get over yerself' and lose the condescension...
your energy would be better served preparing for the tyranny that is indeed already upon us...
Newt did some very good things while serving in congress. He helped to create a conservative coalition and helped to a certain degree to win a majority in congress. He supported good programs such as tax reductions and welfare reform. He helped to balance the budget.
I am impressed by this record. But Newt also allowed himself to be consistently outmaneuvered and outsmarted by Clinton and the MSM. His vanity was his weak point and he soon lost the speakership and Clinton was elected to a second term.
I admire Newt's intelligence but I consider him someone who will pretend to be for anything that is expedient and will help to further his career. I don't think he cares about the American people or conservative principles.
Mitt/Newt 2012? Groan.
When the Pennsylvania primary rolls around in May, I will vote for Newt if Mitt is leading. I will vote for Mitt if Newt is leading. Or (hopefully), I will vote for anybody else if they are still in the race. Excepting (possibly) that crazy moonbat Ron Paul.
A brokered convention becomes a possibility if:
You’re impressed by Newt’s congressional record but don’t feel he cares about the American people or conservative principles?
Groan is right. The French vanilla & vanilla ticket.
Newt gives us a lot of material to bash him with.
How dare you point out the truth about Newt Gingrich. And your despicable tactic of using Newt’s own words against him? For shame! You obviously are a (fill in other candidate here)-bot.
Collective amnesia regarding the past 15 years?
The only reasonable argument for Newt is that he's not Romney and not Obama and he used to vote conservative. But that is an unsound, defeatist argument to make even before voting starts in Iowa.
There are other candidates out there, and I've settled on Rick Santorum as the best of a weak field.
I'd also promote Jon Huntsman to the B list. He's moved way up in my estimation. Pro-life, pro-gun and fiscally conservative. Maybe a B- given his infatuation with gorebul warming.
Bachmann would get a B+ or even an A-. Her presentation skills leave a lot to be desired, but her issue positions are nearly identical to Rick Santorum. I hope at least one of these two survives Iowa and becomes competitive on Super Tuesday. If I were in Iowa, I would caucus for whichever one of these two was the most viable which, at this time, appears to be Santorum.
Frankly, as things are going now, I would prefer a brokered convention or at least have someone else jump into the campaign. It maybe too late given the filing requirements. Like many conservatives, I am not very happy about the choices we have now.
I hope you realize that national polls mean nothing at this point.
As for Iowa: Santorum, Bachmann, Perry, Paul, Gingrich, and Romney are all polling in double digits in recent polls.
And none are perfect conservatives.
So who are these mythical "single-digit perfect conservative candidates" whose supporters you so detest? Huntsman? Roemer? Johnson?
Then don't argue in favor of Gingrich. Argue in favor of some other candidate.
Lets just stop doing the democrats job for them, finally.
Yes, I am impressed with some of the things Newt did 15 years ago.
But if you feel he cares so much about the American people and conservative principles how do you explain his TV ads with Nancy Pelosi promoting Al Gore's fraudulent global warming scam to steal from the taxpayers?
How do you explain his working with Al Sharpton to promote leftist education programs and provide taxpayer money to black racists?
How do you explain his making millions of dollars from Fannie and Freddie at a time when they were promoting subprime mortgage programs that cost the taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars?
Sticking one's head in the sand is not a good strategy. Newt is an electoral disaster waiting to happen.
