Hiker Sarah Shourd criticizes Iranian, American policies
SFGate ^ | 12/27/11 | Ellen Huet

Posted on 12/27/2011 12:05:00 PM PST by SmithL

Sarah Shourd, one of three UC Berkeley graduates that were detained in Iran, spoke out Monday against the Iranian government as well as American policies that she said kept her and the two other hikers in prison for months.

When Shourd was released in September 2010 after more than a year in prison, she thanked Iran’s president and Ayatolla Khomeini for her “compassionate release from detention,” expressing gratitude because she feared for the fate of the two other hikers, who were still imprisoned, she wrote in The Daily Beast. The two hikers, Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal, were released in September.

In her article and in light of Fattal and Bauer’s release, she revised her thanks to Iran.

“Perhaps it wasn’t dishonest of me to thank the Iranian government 16 months ago, but now I can be more specific,” she wrote. “Thank you for using us to further deepen your own crisis of legitimacy around the world and with your own people. Thank you for laying bare your total disregard for justice, fairness, and human liberty.”

So says the moron who hiked in an unmarked border region. How about keep your little butt at home until you learn how the real world works.

Maybe they should hike the DMZ between the Koreas or the mountains between India and Pakistan next.

Ayatolla Khomeini.... is DEAD! She either doesn't know who is the current "Grand Ayatolla" or the reporter goofed. Both are equally likely.

I've been proven wrong again. I used to think that a 2nd Lieutenant with a map is the most dangerous weapon in America.

This gal trumped that tenfold.

Shourd cited HR 1905, the Iran Reduction Act, a bill that she said would prevent low-level discussions between Iran and the Washington, “the only type that has proven effective.”

“In the absence of diplomacy, the slow march toward military conflict with Iran continues unabated,” Shourd wrote.

Well....they were there for a long time, engaging in diplomacy at its lowest level. How'd that work out?

What in hell were those three people doing in such a dangerous place, never mind walking around as they pleased-they are unbelievably lucky to be alive to talk about that misadventure. Did they even have a GPS? A cell phone?

Guess it is time (at least in their own minds) to cash in on their gross stupidity.
Unless they were ‘employed’ by the ‘Company’ or one of its affiliates, there is absolutely no reason for any of the dumbies to be in the region - the fact that ‘we’ had to waste time and resources to free them is enough payment, in fact they should be back charged and made to pay for expenses, right down to all phone calls made in their behalf.

The average ability of Americans to exercise sound judgment and common sense dropped significantly when these three hikers returned home, but the average around Berkeley remained the same.

Two comments:

1) The headline is misleading as she slammed Iran mightily while she only made a comment about a U S Hose bill that prohibited low level discussion with Iran.

2) What on earth would possess a sane person to get within a hemisphere of Iran if they didn't have to be there?

Dung in lieu of brains would be an improvement for any imbecile stupid enough to hike along the border of two hostile nations during war time.

I hope she does not reproduce; her or any of these utterly expendable showboat ‘hikers’.

Sarah Shourd is a non-religious Jew who was working in refugee camps in Syria before her little Iraqi vacation.

If you noticed, when the two guys were released, her boyfriend was very vocal about how well they were treated in Iran, but the other young man was silent and turned away from the reporters. He didn’t want to have anything to do with what his companion was saying to the press.

The silent young man, was in Iraq to explore his Jewish roots. His grandfather was from Fallujah, or some other town in that area.

Well, up the street, here comes my garbage man.

His opinion on Iranian-American policies is EVERY BIT as valid as the hiker’s.

However, the anti-American, anti-Christian queers at SFHate won’t be giving HIM a platform though.

If I had this irresistible urge to go hiking in another country, outside of the US, I would give serious consideration to Canada. If I really wanted to travel, I'd consider Australia.

The closest I want to come to Iran is an antique Persian rug.

They climbed 400 foot up to the top of a ridge to get to Iran. They were warned many times by locals not to go.

I believe they did so to meet activists and give them sat phones.

They are 3 lucky Berkely grads.

Well, it is an interesting adventure destination,
lots of motorcycle tourists visit from western EU.

However they first take the trouble to get a visa
and to enter at one of the land border crossings.
Beutiful country and hospitable people, but unfortunatly
mullah-ridden.

Never a good idea to accidently violate another countries
border.

Ayatolla Khomeini .... is DEAD!

Given that the current Leader of the Supreme Council (head of the Iranian Theocracy) is Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, this could be a case of tomato-tomato! It is a common problem and I would give both the benefit of the doubt.

If you read the short article, Sarah Shourd takes a pretty hard shot at Iran but seems to lament the fact that the U.S. is likely going to end up at war with that sad country, ruled by 'religious' fanatics that long for death and destruction even if it is their death and Iran's destruction.

Shourd is obviously conflicted. She knows now that Iran is a hell-hole and it's leadership is dangerously deluded but her knee-jerk anti-American leanings (she's a graduate of UC Berkeley) push her to find something to complain about regarding the country that helped get her out of an Iranian prison after Shourd and her two male companions stupidly went hiking in Iranian territory and were captured as spies. I submit that this young woman's comments are of little import and will be quickly forgotten.
